Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Huevos Rancheros - Longo Weekendo Fiesta

 | Huevos Rancheros are a monster aggro instro band. I like their studio tracks a lot, and I was looking forward to a great live CD. The performances are mostly pretty good, not as hot as I expected, and the recording is either soundboard or ambient or some combination, in other words, not too good. Too bad. Maybe one day they'll get to KFJC and play in the pit where we'll document their rage and fury just right. If you're a fan, you won't care. If you're not familiar with them, get into them elsewhere first so you aren't disappointed. This is a good band. This CD just doesn't measure up. |

Track by Track Review
Ride the Big E
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
The big introduction... a chord held...
Endsville
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
"Endsville" is a chord progression repeated over a cowpoke rhythm track... sorta like you might imagine Austin CowSurf sounding.
Telstar
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
While vibrant, this is another pedestrian cover of Joe Meek's classic tune. The arrangement reminds me of the early eighties live version the Humans recorded at the Catalyst for the "Surf City Underground" compilation, only not as infectious.
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
"Get Outta Dodge" sports an interesting structure with nicely crafted bridged. Agressive and creative.
Surf Spy (Instrumental)
Huevos Rancheros do a rockin' wonder called "Smart Bomb" in their usual way.
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
As big as it's name, a Link Wray styled jammer, very heavy.
Rocket To Nowhere
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
A lot like the second track, but not as memorable.
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
Another unmemorable track, nice enough in it's way, but would be better well recorded.
Secret Recipe
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
Just a pattern... I already forgot what I heard.
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
My perennial Huevos Favora played incredibly well, but the recording is so weak...
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
A slow number that would be great in a studio, or in the pit... at KFJC.
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
This is the same tune Link Protrudi & the Jay Men did. As with others, it would be sooo great well recorded.
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
A quirky tune that needs subtlety to my ears.
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
Another version... too many pedestrian versions on record. It's a grand tune, and fun to play, and a crowd pleaser, but if it's going to be issued, well, it ought to be killer.
Gump Worsley's Lament
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
A riff & a prayer...
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
A cow poke food fight... way fun.
Raunchy
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
"Raunchy" just doesn't work without a sax or a second guitar...
Go West Young Bee
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
Whoa... more rodeo punk.
Gut Bomb
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
A punkoidal rumba.
Mexi Mix
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
"La Cucaracha" into "Tequila" for a mere minute... pedestrian arrangement.
RawLink WrayGarageRock (Instrumental)
Great Link Wray performance.
