Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA | This fine new Italian band sent this CD-R demo of an album in progress. I'm impressed. there are some borrowed licks, but overall, this is one nice disc. All tracks are excellent for driving with the top down. |
Picks: Biscaya, Avanti, Apres Ski, The Wet-Set, The Rebel, Tsunami, The Wet-Tones Stomp
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
With an intro that reminds me a little of Au-Go-Go's' "All Over Town," this fine track rolls with infectious rhythm and great surf reverb. Thundering tom toms, ringing guitars, and solid surf!
Surf (Instrumental)
Exotic percussion and surf sensibilities together is a somewhat familiar piece. Is it the Supertones song? Never a finer looking car was made in America, and this pays it just homage. Infectious and excellent for the open road.
Surf (Instrumental)
Krontjong Devils' "Apres Ski" is similar to the Blazers' "Bangalore" in spots, and the end of the breaks is like the breaks in Shark Bait's "Surf Punk," but the tune is also different enough to fresh. Pulsing beat and excellent textures keep it flowing.
Surf (Instrumental)
"The Wet-Set" sports a trad sound and trad melody line... not derivative or copied, just right in the pocket. Rich tone and infectious driving rhythms make this a top down classic.
Surf (Instrumental)
Davie Allan's tune made more reverby than Davie ever plaid it. This is a solid arrangement, and a very surfy track. The pounding tom toms deliver big power.
Surf (Instrumental)
Oriental common law progressions, suave almost Paul Johnson arranging, and a fun melody.
Surf (Instrumental)
This rockabilly-surfabilly stomper is like the sort of thing the Cadillac Angels would have a ball with. Very cool!!!
