The Wayouts - S/Tdotdotdotdot
artworkThe Wayouts was a surfband from Las Vegas, where ex-Shockwaves bassist Randy Hyden found himself. After endless prodding, Randy finally gave me these recordings at the recent reunion of the Shockwaves. Why was he holding back? These are amazing tracks. A very fine set!

The Whip dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a highly rhythmic number with an Eddie Munster rhythm. The sax carries most of the lead here. Great infectious power and pulsing throb. Totally cool.

Surfline Drive dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Wow, what a groovy instro. pumping bass, great power, totally infectious energy, and great drums. Bass booms, guitars rage, sax snarls. What more do you need?

El Camino dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Nasty sax honkin' of the slow tortured variety. Guitar shimmer a la "Harlem Nocturne," and smoky midnight bar moodiness. Great imagery, and a very sultry underbelly.

Caravan dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a great bluesy James Brown inspired version of "Caravan." Pumped and saucy as only a Las Vegas act could make it. Entirely cool! Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington conspired on this magnificent song in 1937. It's become as much part of the surf genre as any pre-surf monster could.

The Inspector dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Making big power via hard driving everything, the Wayouts push this to the limit. Drama, dance-floor grind, and a lot of oomph! Not melodic, but way fun!

Hodad dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Moderately paced, with a cowboy beat and very cool guitar line. This sparkles with surf sensibilities and energy. Great drums, excellent guitars, rock-solid bass, nifty sax, and dripping springs. Yee-haw!

Dick Tracy dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Ventures' catchy "Dick Tracy" is twanged and punched up with flair and compelling energy. The arrangement is strong, the performance superb, and the power quite evident. Wonderful.

Heads Up dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Honkin' and stompin' bluesy fun from Freddy King with reverb and sax. Very clean and crisp, with ample edge and pumped up intensity. Very cool.

Penetration dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This speedy and pulsing version of "Penetration" is loaded with energy and power. It's not often that a band arranges with just enough originality to make it their own, yet retains real reverence for the original. A pleasure to hear.

What's This dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This moderately paced song is all rock'n'roll with reverb. Surf and blues and charm wrapped in tight sparkling performance. I found that this grows on you as you listen. Really nice.

Don't Monkey With Tarzan dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great muted rhythm, pulsing simplicity, delicate interplay. Saucy and hot, restrained and precise. A very cool track!
