The Wangs - On Targetdotdotdot
artworkThis is the second full length release from France's Wangs. Often ominous, usually trashy, and always reverby, this band drives the surf envelope hard for more than frat and less than pure surf. They play with abandon, and deliver lots of energy. Relatively lo-fi sound holds this release back somewhat. 12 surf and slam instros, along with two vocals, "Vamonos a Praia" and "Birthday."
Picks: Vlah, Vlah, Vlah, Pilot, Sushi, The Shidenkai, Fire Lord, Nitro, Keanu Reeves, The Shidenkai Revenge, No Brain, Untitled, Sky Patrol, La Course de Manuel

Track by Track Review

Vlah, Vlah, Vlah dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Ultra reverbed ominous surfology, with dark double picking and a hard driving riff. Thunder and rising water threaten the peace as the Wangs shout "Vlah, Vlah, Vlah" here and there. Cool tune.

Pilot dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Pilot" is too riffy for my taste, though it has a tone of energy and lots of great reverb crashes. Thundering drums and bass power a splashy track.

Sushi dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Intense surf and slam... nonmelodic, but with a very cool rhythm track and annoying truck backing up warning beeper.

The Shidenkai dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Slow and reverby, "The Shidenkai" is moody and dangerous. Tribal drums and splashy guitar rise gradually like a train overtaking you. A bit of "Maleguena" for a break and then a stomp and start verse before a thrashy end.

Fire Lord dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Frat party surf and slam, fast and dangerous, like a Phantom Surfers track. Lots of fire and guts, solid playing, and pretty surfable, just not melodic.

Nitro dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Dick Dale's "Nitro" is pummeled and thrashed. A credible performance and powerful delivery. Without some original arranging, it doesn't quite rise above the cover category, despite a solid performance. Having said that, it is pretty punkoidal and infectious.

Keanu Reeves dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Lots of fire here, and lots of Dick Daleisms. Big, thrashy, punkoidal, and spiked with screamed chants of praise to "Keanu Reeves." I usually don't care for tracks this trashy, but this is quite endearing.

The Shidenkai Revenge dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"The Shidenkai Revenge" is all splashed and trashed out, with dwell at 11 and power peaked. This is a very interesting track, projecting a dark mood and an exotic far away sense.

No Brain dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"No Brain" is a little like a grodie nod to the Catalina's "Banzai Washout." Some cool effects, damped picking, hard driving double picked leads, flying glissandoes, and powered drums and bass. Solid. It's followed by a short surf celebration of reverb.

Untitled dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a short surf blast that's not listed on the jacket. Perhaps it's an introduction to the vocal Birthday, perhaps not. In either case, it's cool and just too short.

Sky Patrol dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Sky Patrol" moves slowly against a calliope beat in Greek time. Playful and splashy, it's a very fun track.

La Course de Manuel dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Thundering drums, tuff guitar and shouts of "Hey" drive this angry surf stomp. Big and ominous, "La Course de Manuel" is an uneasy power drive on a cloudy afternoon along a stormy coastline.
