The Volcanos - Surf Quakedotdotdot
artworkOne of the best new trad bands around, and their from Royal Oak, Michigan. They are also essentially the same as the incredible Hell Benders (best spaghetti western band anywhere!) and the Surfin' Zombies and are rumored to include ex-Snake-Out members. There's something in the water in Royal Oak that makes the guitars twang an extra smidgen. Great CD, and a band to watch!
Picks: Deora, Whirlpool, Aviation High School, Bikini Sunset, Coast Highway, Krakatoa, Beatnik Bandit, Surfin' St. Helens, Eruption, Half Moon Bay, Sand Crab, The Last Wave

Deora dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Faster than fast riff, totally surf!

Whirlpool dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great rapid fire surfisms. Cooler than cool! It's funny how different my reaction is to a simple riff when the performance is infectious. This track rules!

Aviation High School dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

In the search for surf names, we find Southern California's Aviation High School fitting since it's so near Manhattan Beach and the Pacific. This is a heavy weight number with lots of hooklets throughout. It's unusual and feels good to listen to.

Bikini Sunset dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Reminds me a lot of the Surf Trio's "99th Wave" [theme from "Neat Stuff"], but not as edgie.

Coast Highway dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A not too interesting basic tune.

Krakatoa dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

I've been playing "Krakatoa" for quite a while. Both of their CD's are worth a spot in your collection. "Krakatoa" was a great single, and it still commands attention. Very powerful and evil. The Volcanos are a radical high energy strait ahead hard driving surf outfit.

Beatnik Bandit dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Named after Big Daddy Ed Roth's magnificent early sixties fiberglass street rod that featured hydraulic joy stick steering and was powered by an Olds mill as I recall. Oh, yeah, and the song is just like that... very nice lads.

Surfin' St. Helens dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Erupting with hot ash a plenty, this double picked monster is a low-E menacer. Great for a drive down the old San Jose Turnpike.

Eruption dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big chunk single picked odd melody line.

Half Moon Bay dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Can you spell fast? No one drives that fast in Half Moon Bay! Wow, what a speed demon on that trusty Strat. The fiery performance lends a grand feel to this track.

Sand Crab dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

An odd number with not much direction.

The Last Wave dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Nicely played and pleasant listening. The energy from the speed is somehow restrained.
