The Ups! - S/Tdotdotdot
artworkThe Ups come from Pisa, Italy. They are a mighty aggressive female trio (Cristina Mannari - guitar, Chiara Cusino - bass, and Caterina Canale - drums). They take influences from all over the map, like the Pyramids, the Jimmy Castor Bunch, Roger Corman, Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, Jane and Peter Fonda, Ed Sanders (Fugs), Duane Eddy, Henry Winkler, Link Wray, the women of the Cramps, Grace Kelly, Joe Dalessandro (posed for cover of the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers, the Mummies, and Bo Diddley. They seem to loathe the lounge thing, printing "fuck bongos" on their liner. So, from that list of input comes a unique output of major fuzz and surf, of Davie Allan and Link Wray, of the Pyramids and reverb. This eight song 10 inch contains seven instros and one vocal, "U Pussycat Stop," which is a Fuzztones sounding number with a definite 60's garage snarl. Solid first effort from a solid Italian combo.
Picks: Intro, Don Zebra, Anthalidei, Death Of A Board, Ups Diana, Crackin' Waves, Up Up and Away

Track by Track Review

Intro dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

"Intro" is a slow Link Wray-like tune that's slow double picked for an ominous effect. It evokes images of three hard-case women in black fishnets, short black leather skirts, black turtleneck sweaters, and tall boots, walking away from the camera into a certain rumble on the docks.

Don Zebra dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

"Don Zebra" uses big fuzz, and reminds me of the Brood gone surfin' with Davie Allan and a whammy bar. Pretty cool.

Anthalidei dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

"Anthalidei" is less fuzzy and uses a more catchy riff. The trade off is balanced as the smoother sound allows the more melodic riff to come out.

Death Of A Board dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

"Death Of A Board" is like a scene from a Roger Corman biker flick - a bunch of black leather riders on noisy Harley hogs moving slowly towards a funeral.

Ups Diana dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

"Ups Diana" uses vibrato to the max in a mid-tempo tune with yelps and grunts that emit right from the crotch. It's not melodic, but it sure is animalistic.

Crackin' Waves dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

"Crackin' Waves" is based on a progression that somehow gets you going. The melody is double picked, but still it is quite backtrack like, so why is it infectious?

Up Up and Away dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

"Up Up and Away" is total fuzz, a backtrack that needs a vocal I think, or a lead guitar line.
