Susan and the Surftones - This Ain't No Beachparty (This Ain't No Foolin' Around)dotdotdotdot
artworkSusan and the Surftones latest seven inch release is a fine four song slab of their continuing fine work. This east coast band occupies an interesting niche between the Ventures and the Guitar Ramblers where one of surf's great female guitarists struts her stuff.
Picks: Baja, Stinger 67, Blue Hammer, G. I. Blues

Track by Track Review

Baja dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Low down and gritty approach with vibrato and very nice guitar interplay and textural contrasts.

Stinger 67 dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Exotic tribal drums work well under this very pleasing and enjoyable track. The melody riff is playful and original. The band's energy is superb. I think this is right up there with Susan's best work. magnificent!

Blue Hammer dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Solid surf riffs and infectious picking, ambient organ, and a driven rhythm section. This is a good track for showing off the band's chemistry. It's not exactly melodic, but it sure is infectious.

G. I. Blues dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This bluesy number has a warm and endearing feel over a military theme. It's cute without being cutesy, which is hard to do. Melodic and memorable, and very well executed. Nice job, ladies and gentlemen.
