The Surf Trio - Shook Outta Shapedotdotdotdot
artworkGreat band from Portland Oregon that blends a solid understanding of surf and an amazingly rich understanding of Garage. This is their first CD release in a few years. It more than hints at the power of their amazing Neat Stuff sessions. A very good bet, despite the limited number of instros enclosed.
Picks: Tube Screamer, Jewell, Foiled, Stacy, Lucky Surfer, Neptune's Revenge, Emeralds

Track by Track Review

Tube Screamer dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A strong and fuzz-twang driven growler, with ample edge, but shy of the charm and spunk of the Neat Stuff sessions. This does sport some mighty tasty rock guitar licks that add to the originality, and the raw power does in fact scream Big Surf Outside! Simple but effective.

Jewell dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Chunky - very chunky, and whammy twang delimited. This is a spunky track with edge and danger in every corner, even when the track slows to take it's breath, the prettiness is only lying over a bed of energetic attack, just waiting to launch into the night. Fine track.

Foiled dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Bigger garage instro rage style, super loud edge, and short board angst. Melodic and powerful. I don't suppose that these guys can do wrong... Big bad and bombastic.

Stacy dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Super cool damped reverbed chunka chunka, melodic flow, and a really nice sound sandwich this unusually rendered surf instro. It has a pop-funk kinda melody, but it oozes glassy tubes and beach bunnies named Stacy.

Lucky Surfer dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Punk chunk under short board surf, edgie and high energy, purely enjoyable. The fuzz guitar lines are splendid. This is a mighty fine track.

Neptune's Revenge dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Chunky and garage, fast and frightful, this screams out 50 mile an hour rides on 20 foot faces dropping into the rocks. Mighty big track with stinging wham and grinding glissandoes.

Emeralds dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Country polka, super cow-surf lead lines, melodic and much too fun. This is a wonderful track. I think it shows off the talent that got them the Neat Stuff gig, because it is so different than their other material, yet fits them exactly.
