Surf Report - Supersonic Salvationdotdotdotdot
artworkThis is a splendid release. Surf Report has matured in many areas, with fine writing and playing, and more developed arrangements. This just may topple "Naugahyde" as my fave track from this San Diego band.

Out past the end of track 11 is the hidden vocal "Do It One More Time For Me."
Picks: Sandpaper Paddles, Ramadan, 3 Rolled Tacos, Tanner, Trainwreck, Off The Richter, Sucker Punch, Bluff Failure, Landslide, Bite The Hand That Feeds, Part II, Ace Of Spades

Track by Track Review

Sandpaper Paddles dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Wow! This is a solid and melodic classically styled surf epic with modern edgy tone. I've long considered "Naugahyde" my fave Surf Report tune, but that just might be changing. This is rock solid!

Ramadan dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Middle Eastern themes pumped out with intensity and twang, over a militaristic beat. Lots of pomp and drama here. "Ramadan" is a damn fine track, uniquely built around the sounds of Mecca. It's a whole new take. Excellent!

3 Rolled Tacos dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"3 Rolled Tacos" is playful and Spanish influenced, with very cool percussion and a friendly guitar line. The liquid chords support the melody well. Very nice track.

Tanner dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Ominous rhythms under harmonic chords and building drama, eventually yielding to a post punk melodic power drive. This is quite a big track, with plenty of power subtly applied.

Trainwreck dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Damped chords introduce an intense ride on rusty rails towards the inevitable. "Trainwreck" is surfy, yet bluesy.

Off The Richter dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This tuff track builds slowly from a swirly rumble to a fine rhythmic galloping surf tremor. "Off The Richter" is solid and enticing, with big guitar twang and double picked delicacy. Intense and powerful without being overbearing and too loud.

Sucker Punch dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Rhythmic chop and thunder, and all about relentless rumble, "Sucker Punch" is less melodic than most here, yet pretty satisfying.

Bluff Failure dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Well now, this is nice. Pretty without being soft, ringing with distortion, and tribal without being trite. "Bluff Failure" is quite an adventure in uncharted environs where tourists never go. Lots of style and engaging changes.

Landslide dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big surf and slam, speedy glissandoes, power drive guitar... it's a shortboard thrasher for a big day in high winds. The exhilaration of danger is written all over "Landslide." Fine track.

Bite The Hand That Feeds, Part II dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Agent Orange's "Bite The Hand That Feeds" is big and powerful, and more than just a nod to the great band. Cool effects, bass grumble, tuff drums, and a sense that the future is even gloomier from here then from where Mike Palm wrote it. Excellent!

Ace Of Spades dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The opening chords hint of Lemmy's song, but soon enough, it becomes a slowish bluesy mover with a moody bridge and interesting guitar lines. Very aquatic in a dramatic way.
