The Surf Coasters - Astral Circledotdotdotdotdot
artworkThree track CD-3 single in a great package. The jacket is a parody of the artwork from one of Harvey Mandell's classic Phillips albums. It's long (wide) 3x6 format required a special filler. The tracks are all marvelous, of course. This is the best of the Japanese surf bands, and I am amazed that they can be on Victor and not be imported or domestically released. A must have!
Picks: Astral Circle, Tally-Ho!, Wipe Out

Astral Circle dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This version is faster and more surfy than the version on the Surface Impression CD. A great ominous melody in a trad arrangement. Very nice tune indeed.

Tally-Ho! dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A hotter mix than on the Surface Impressions CD, and a rather fine trad style tune, inspired by or at least very close to Paul Johnson's tune of the same name. Great listening, great melody, great rhythm, great... you get it.

Wipe Out dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A non-album track, and an unusual version of the Surfaris' classic. The arrangement pays homage to Booker T. and the MG's, and the added bongos, subdued guitar tones, and background keys makes for an excursion into the surfers' lounge. Mighty interesting how something so fresh can be done with an overdone classic. Bitchin' summer on the verandah with a tall cool one!
