Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA The Surf Coasters - Surf Panic '95

 | Man-oh-man! This sounds like the earliest of the Surf Coasters 4 CD's, all issued in '95. The performances are more raw and intense, and they play like there is no tomorrow! Until these guys appeared on the scene,Japanese surf bands were primarily either Ventures clones like Eddie and the Surfbeats, or lo-fi garage bands like Jackie and the Cedrics. This band is a lone on the Japanese front, and are indispensable to any surf instro collection. A great CD! |
Picks: Into The Surf Space, Cut Back, The Clash, Ultra Q's Theme, Dolphins, Mr. Moto, Beach Monster, Bikemen!, Misirlou, Cartridge Wave
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
A bit of electronic wave action fluff opens the CD.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Cut Back" is a high energy tune typical of their style, intense, melodic, chunky.
Surf (Instrumental)
"The Clash" is very heavily Dick Dale inspired, and the guitar tones are very close to his, like the tones achieved by the reformed Chantays on "Killer Dana" - perfect surf sound.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Ultra Q's Theme" is cool and moody. A new variation for the band, it is slightly reminiscent of Laika and the Cosmonauts.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Dolphins" is just plain wonderful. Surfy, melodic, pristine, precise, reverb heaven. This version of Live on a TV show called Pumpkin. The sound is quite lo-fi, but man what energy!
Surf (Instrumental)
This cover of the Richard Delvecchio / Paul Johnson classic "Mr. Moto" is quite standard in arrangement and performance.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Beach Monster" is a mighty intense and hair-raising tune. You can not resist it's draw. And the glissandoes of sampled breaking waves is more than the mind can handle.
Surf (Instrumental)
Chunky and aggressive, playful and powerful. Plundering the silence, "Bikemen!" thunders through a basic progression with power and intense drive.
Surf (Instrumental)
This is a fine trad "Misirlou" to close it out. All I can say is WOW!
Surf (Instrumental)
Closing out with more electro waves...
