Surf City Neptunes - S/Tdotdotdot
artworkThis cassette is the first issue from the Surf City Neptunes, recorded in 1996. This early material seems more melodic with more natural changes and more interesting ideas.

Track by Track Review

Floater dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a good opener for this CD-R. A little tweaky, a little quirky, and riff-based, "Floater" is fun, with its many false endings and dribbly double picked breaks. It's warm in a playful way.

Big Room dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Double picked harder driving than the rest here, "Big Room" is more of a throbber and meaner too. Just shy of melodic, but interesting, and peppered with glissandoes. In some ways, it's a little like the Hollywood Surfers sessions Paul Johnson did. Pretty cool.

Rocket Fish dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Soft whammy chords, gutty guitar, and a surfy riff. Not quite melodic, but varied enough to avoid the riff rock label.

Thick-n-Pitchin dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

light weight double picking against big chords opening the track, then double picked flourishes and glissandoes based on a riff. More jam-like than I like.

Spitfire dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is an solid track. It begins with delicate harmonics before launching into long dribbling double picking and rhythmic chords. Its chord dominated structure doesn't seem to detract from its enjoyability factor at all. Tastefully done.

The Drop In dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A double picked opening rumbles into a dark number with danger just around the corner. Relentless in a grumbling kinda way.

Cove Classic dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Spiffy dribbly double picking, surf twang, and a tweaky melody line give this a magnetic quality. maybe their best effort to date, "Cove Classic" is unusual enough, while leaning on classic sounds. Spanish imagery is conveyed through the dual leads. Very nice.
