Track by Track Review

Pugsakuk dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a nice little number, with a sad feel, and an almost dangerous edge brought forth by the rhythm riff. "Pugsakuk" is a groovy little twangster.

1,000 Foot Road dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Without the hot rod peeling out, "1000 Foot Road" becomes much more interesting. The band launches into a rhythmic number that relies on a cool riff and really nice guitar picking.

Wingnut dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Excellent super high damped picking accents this solid rendering. Very pleasing track, with tasty glissandoes and an open road rhythm.

Victory At Sea dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a slow and slightly sludgy track, a little like the Sandals in a bad mood. It's not o cover of the amazing TV series theme from Robert Russell Bennett and the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra (Richard Rogers).

I Surf In Black dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This delicately picked tune is very cool, with a sad drift and deliberate beat. Rhythmic and soft, with an enticing lilt.

El Rollo dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"El Rollo" is a slow and semi military tune with a sad sounding melody line dripping South of the border vacation surf.

Ted's Twist dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Ted's Twist" fades up from silence to an almost mono demo sound. The melody is cool, but the sound is really very murky.

Torque Wrench dotdotdot
Ventures Surf (Instrumental)

Bits of "Competition Coupe" and a Ventures-ish dryer sound. Great drums, and a solid effort in a nineties surf vein.

Sand Pumper dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Tasty rhythms and a friendly riff together in a solid surf instro. The riff is varied by climbing ever higher up the neck and onto the low-E. Great drums, fast and very fun.

Wingnut dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Excellent super high damped picking accents this solid rendering. Intense and thick, and a little murky. A spy guitar riff and murky sound.

Supertones Surf dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Pumped drums a la "Squad Car," and a softer melody line and delivery. The main riff is friendly and warm. Quite enjoyable.

1,000 Foot Road dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A hot rod peels out down a less than quarter mile strip of asphalt, the the band launches into a rhythmic number that relies on a cool riff and really nice guitar picking.

The Wet Set dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Nicely played and recorded, gentle, and somewhere between Richie Podolor and the Ventures. "The Wet Set" sports a circular riff a la Rake and the Surftones.

Surfista dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Cool Paul Johnson-ish progressions and a racing melody riff with warm open road leanings... nicely structured and a tip of the hat to the Super Stocks style. Very smooth.

Dr. Yes dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Dr. Yes" is very pretty song with a gentle melody that sticks to you. Enjoyable and soothing.

Harbor Patrol dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Harbor Patrol" is a restrained tune with a fluid structure. The melody riff is interesting, and the tone very appropriate for the theme. The melody riff is interesting, and the tone very appropriate for the theme. Quite surfy.

Avanti dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Well, not that I'm gonna let the fact that this track is named after my favorite automobile ever made influence my review, but... The lead/rhythm counter melodies are really nice to hear in surf. It has a great feel to it. I like it a lot... and the car too! This fine melody is warm and inviting, the glissandoes are great, and the trad feel updated just enough. Excellent drums and rhythm.

Flamenco Surf dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Flamenco Surf" a.k.a. "Flamingo Stomp" sports very nice interplay between the guitars. Fun and cool.

Last Ride dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Last Ride" is their best original I think. More energy than most of their other tracks. An infectious riff and rhythmic backtrack, pushed out with a real surf sound and a great walking bass line. Nice track for sure.

Surf Fever 2000 dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Amidst screams and pounding drums lies a plaintiff riff and ringing chords. This progression based piece has more than its share of energy. Dark and low-down, and pretty derivative.

Playa Del Rey dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Playa Del Rey" is a Spanish flavor track with warm tone and solid drums. The balance between lead and rhythm is quite nice, and the melody is excellent, though derivative.

Moonshot Part 1 dotdotdot
Euro Surf (Instrumental)

The countdown precedes the grodie vibratoed melody. This sad adventure tune has a European feel to it more than surf. It's a well crafted piece, at once familiar and new. The melody seems like a variation on "Dance On" in spots.

Side Slippin' dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This track has a very warm tone, round and very pleasing. The melody floats off of the guitar, remaining in your memory long after the track ends. Parts of the melody line are derived from "Blue Moon." Overall, this is an original and very pretty piece. Really nice.

The Sweet Ride dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Dribbly glissandoes, plinky piano, solid surfability, and a very memorable melody riff coexist in this fine track. The surf factor is high, and the playing really good. Infectious in a powerful and friendly way.

Media Noche dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Bongos and an almost mystical sound support this middle eastern sounding tune. The ambiance is distant, almost floating on a desert breeze, with excellent piano. I found myself coming back to this track repeatedly.

Lone Rider dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Percussive Italian-Mexican feel and floating whammy, with a bit of the west as well. This plucker is very listenable and nicely played. Deluxe friendliness.

King Size dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

With a melody line very close to John Anderson's (Bay Men / Eddie and the Showmen / Humans / Ninja Nomads / Neon Spores) "Madame Prairie Dog," this warm piece passes through like a cowboy riding tall in the saddle. The piano is just so honky tonk.

Moonshot Part 2 dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The second rendering of this tune sports an intro hints of "Telstar." Not as fun as Part 1. Organ lead.

Shanghai Surf dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Keyboardist Tim Sullivan penned this. It's smooth and melodic, but a bit undeveloped. It lacks spit and polish, and energy. Still, it's a nice tune.

Vintage Surf dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Interesting piano dominated with a nearly inaudible guitar melody. Underdeveloped, but potentially cool. It sounds like a variation-bad mix or backtrack of "Calhoun Surf."

Twango dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A little spy like, pretty much subdued, and sporting a derivative melody, "Twango" is nonetheless an enjoyable track. Shimmer and whammy, with solid drums.
