SuperJune and the Tikiwaves - Cosmic Twister (Special Edition)dotdotdotdot
artworkEvolved from Tiki Wave Orchestra, SuperJune and the Tikiwaves are a grand vocal and surf experiment that have the kind of charm I fell in love with with Tiki Tiki Bamboooos, and their own vibrant and infectious sound, melding surf and lounge and exquisite chanteuse vocals. I normally don't review vocals, but this band is just so charming and downright good, that I just couldn't resist!

Track by Track Review

Waterman Daddy-O dotdotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

There's a cool guitar progression supported by throbbing bass and very good drums, all backing a circular vocal melody delivered with compelling charm. "Waterman Daddy-O (vocal)" brought me back many times.

Bad Girls dotdotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

Really great bass lines pump under acoustic rhythms with rock solid drums. SuperJune's vocals are perfectly endearing, and they seem symbiotic with the band's groove. Very cool!

Salesman dotdotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

Hendrixy riffs precede soul strut guitar chords that play well against the drums. The sultry bass is wonderful with the alluring vocals. Way cool!

Wonder Boy dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

Genuine surf guitar, glissandos, punk energy, circular riffs, really cool drums, and vocals that are as well suited to the music as early Debby Harry was suited to Blondie the band.

Lunar Dance dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

"Lunar Dance" has a pulsing and easy gate that runs under self-harmonized vocals that are very compelling! The backtrack is fairly repetitious, yet the vocals are so cool, it doesn't seem to matter at all. I like this a lot.

Cassandra Calling dotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

Great drums, cool reverb chops, and swing-vocals give "Cassandra Calling" a very fun sound. This is perhaps the most "common" sound here, if that term even fits. Jump and jive and melodically vocalize.

Cosmic Umbrella dotdotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

Richly textures guitars and bass, and great rock drums yield to a gentle reggae rhythm behind a really enjoyable vocal. "Cosmic Umbrella" is pure pop, and a real pleasure. There are times when the drums remind me a bit of Din's stunning sole LP. It's much less intense than that, but there's something in the percussion and soul of the song that they share. Really nice stuff.

Cyberdelic Racer dotdotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

Surf guitar, round bass, and thundering drums run in juxtaposition to rock-ish pop vocals that create interest and power pop fun. Very cool!
