Track by Track Review

Trouble At The Speedway
Surf (Instrumental)

Speedy attack a la The Torpedoes, great drums, and wondrous intensity.

Action Boy Go! dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Beginning as it its a dark behemoth, "Action Boy Go!" rocks with powerful thick tone and dangerous twang. The compressed distortion of the liquid guitar is all about heavy thunder and threatening behavior.

Flathead Fury dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Groovy sustain-driven feedback and a country beat create at-odds sounds that end up very complimentary. Intense, thick, and very powerful. Like a loud version of the Berzerkers!

Nashville Stomp dotdotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

Intense modern guitar darkens your door with harsh tone and compression. Everything is loud and powerful here! This is a rocker, not a surfer, but it sure is powerful! Stinging whammy and no mercy!

Drag The Lake dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Drag The Lake" is a slow number with a thick and powerful sound. It's compressed ringing tone and lovely melody add up t a compelling track with rich imagery. Aside from the creative double entendre of the title, the song is simply enjoyable. I like this a lot.

The Ballad of El Guitardo dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a great galloping rage of intense chords and distortion-laden twang. "The Ballad of El Guitardo" is reminiscent of some of the grodier Torpedoes tracks, but with a fresh face and more precision. Superb!

Skull Shifter dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A solid bass line and reliable drums are overtaken by rising feedback and intense guitar. "Skull Shifter" has Davie Allan-esq guitar dominance, accomplished with a very thick and immediate sound. The occasional inclusion of feedback between verses makes this a real powerful track.

Pin Up Doll dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Ringing tone and a circular melody delicately carry you into a sunset dream. You can easily imagine the loneliness of having only the paper image as the night falls. Quite nice.

'63 Burnout dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The band's namesake song is a bit cowboy with a huge intense sound. Way more power than should be allowed, and a dangerous attractiveness. "'63 Burnout" bowls you over!

Pipeline dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A glissando free opening brings on long shallow whammy chords and harsh wave assault. Chantays' "Pipeline" has been done many ways, but this is kinda like as if Link Wray had written it. Refreshingly arranged and intensely delivered.

Brodie dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Doin' a brodie in front of the school at 3 PM is an image of fifties hot rods and juvenile delinquents. "Brodie" is a paean to that ritual of dark times past. Dangerous and thick and intense and kinda jammy. The feedback sustain is superb, and the echoed guitar that follows quite psychedelic.

Orange Guitar dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Cool drums and speedy guitar raucously shatter the night with huge intensity. Splendid feedback rising from the guitar's decay make this a very rock'n'roll kinda thing. "Orange Guitar" is splashy and poundy and in your face cool. The guitar reminds me at times of Armageddon's "Buzzard."

Sleep Walk dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

I can't say I've heard Santo and Johnny's classic turned into a loud track. It's not quite over the top, but the delicacy of the playing is at exquisite odds with the loudness. Quite cool!

Theme From Attacko dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Dark and much as you might anticipate from its title, "Theme From Attacko" assaults any expectation of an easy letdown at the end of the disc. Exuberant and exhausting, with finesse and gusto. Wonderful, with great drums.
