Shig and Buzz - The Beach Chalet 5/29/03dotdotdotdot
artworkShig and Buzz are one of the most illusive bands on the scene, and certainly one of the finest. This is an ambient document of a performance at the Beach Chalet in San Francisco on May 29, 2003. While the sound is limited, the performance sure is hot!
Picks: Hawaii, Chromatic, Cavalier, Yellow Magic Bus, Shooting Star, Hunters Theme, Drums A Go-Go

Track by Track Review

Hawaii dotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

This is a great Shig and Buzz song, with island chords and tourist lushness everywhere. A great performance, and more fun suave than one song should have.

Chromatic dotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Pounding drums and oddly attractive guitar lines in this beautiful song. It oozes vacation adventure captured on Kodachrome. A great song!

Cavalier dotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

"Cavalier" is a really nice composition. It has a sorta Shadows take on "Mondo Cane" feel, with a very pretty melody, and exceptionally good guitar tone. This is one listenable track.

Yellow Magic Bus dotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

This is a pumpin' fast song with a whole lot of energy and drive. A simple and powerful riff, pounding drums, and throbbing bass. Tribal and urgent!

Shooting Star dotdotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

"Shooting Star" remains one of my favorite Shig and Buzz instros. High spirited, almost King of Hawaii like in melody structure and pacing. This is a spectacular track. It is infectious, pristine, melodic, and very fun. It has a kinder-gentler Cruel Sea break, a divine friendliness, and a full round sound. The whammy dips are cool, and any would proud to have created this. Absolutely great!

Hunters Theme dotdotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

A rockin' little number with a Shadows feel and a "Cruel Sea" connection. Catchy and well delivered, "Hunters Theme" has a great beat and some very cool licks. The guitar shines and the drums Rock!

Drums A Go-Go dotdotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

This classic Paul Buff / Sandy Nelson song is amped up and pumpin' hot. I've long liked the Hollywood Persuaders' original, and the Mermen's live assault. This is a spectacular version.
