Shig 33 - Blue Moodsdotdotdot
artworkThis CD-R is made from early Shigemi Komiyama demos. His ax of choice may be drums, but his guitaristry is also excellent. This mostly undiscovered talent should be heard way more often. This is more bluesy than his usual material, and not too surfy, but it sure is good!
Picks: Blue Bayou, Love Is Blue, La Morena, Stumble, Although The Sun Is Shining

Track by Track Review

Blue Bayou dotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

This is a beautiful arrangement of Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou." It's simple and direct, beautifully played and cleanly recorded. Moody and flowing, and with the sense of emotion that was embedded in the original.

Love Is Blue dotdotdotdot
Near Surf (Instrumental)

Paul Mauriat's "Love Is Blue" is a fine choice for this blue mood disc. Shimmering vibrato second guitar under Shig's full round tone makes this quite surfable. Totally different from Shigeo Naka's cover, Shig 33 goes beyond Paul Mauriat, leaving the limp arrangement behind as he takes this melodic masterpiece into pure guitar magic territory.

La Morena dotdotdot
Prog Fusion (Instrumental)

"La Morena" features Michael Sasaki's fusional guitar work and the precision magic of Shig 33's drums. It flies on the wings of prog, with an endearing compressed intensity, yet a delicate intricacy.

Stumble dotdotdot
Blues (Instrumental)

Freddy King's "The Stumble" features the bluesy guitar of Shig's friend Kiyoshi Suzuki. It's on the light side, with beautiful playing and a solid groove.

Although The Sun Is Shining dotdotdot
Euro (Instrumental)

This is a moody and fluid Euro styled instrumental arrangement of "Although The Sun Is Shining," which takes it out of the adult contemporary camp ground and into guitarland. Very pretty and nicely played.
