Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
"Quick Sand" is a big, slightly punky song with power and speed. Solid drivin' surf tone and a solid beat drag this rhythmic and moody track. It has a lot of cow surf and Texas twang. It's not very melodic, but it powers its way along.
Surf (Instrumental)
A rolling cowboy beat and big chords conspire to create a expansive spaghetti western, with unshaven long riders on pintos trotting across the big screen. Great guitar tone, great rhythm, great beat, solid bottom end. Very dramatic!
Surf (Instrumental)
Throbbing vibrato, dangerous shimmer, and a menacing melody line. The sci-fi slither and throb are very effective. "Snake Shake" is a tremolo monster.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Flight P-51" is gloriously whammy chorded and soulful. This performance is sultry cool, with liquid smooth chords and long dramatic sustain. Superb!
Surf (Instrumental)
This is a splendid track with a catchy riff and excellent synergy from the drums and bass. Slightly spy, a bit southwestern, and totally rhythmic. "Cactus Stingray" is cautiously optimistic. Very strong!
Surf (Instrumental)
"Toothless Cannibal" is an ominous riff oriented song with a dramatic structure. Rhythmic and dangerous, in an exotic cuisine sort of way. The images of being gummed to death are inescapable! Nice track.
Surf (Instrumental)
Dark images of wave shredders, drowning gremmies, and shortboard suicide, with psychedelic modulated wah wah. Dramatic, powerful, and mean.
Surf (Instrumental)
There's something squirmy about the thought of a hairy black "Tarantula Taco!" I think they should change restaurants. This track is a grand song with mariachi trumpets and beautiful chords. This is one huge winner!!! Nice to hear this done live.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Petrina" is a modified traditional tune, with fluid guitar lines. Live, this is much less haunting and more intense. The whammy adds warmth and grit. A fine performance.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Mookiest Limbo" is kinda a Link Wray-like - sluggish street-gang tough. The fullness and body of the track makes it downright dangerous. Cool track.
Surf (Instrumental)
Spanish licks open "Wave King" with drama. The muted delicate plucking and tasteful guitar lines are complimented perfectly by the drums and bass. Austin whammy surf with a excellent energy and chemistry.
Surf (Instrumental)
Written as the theme for a film that didn't happen, "Body Bag" sounds just like the name implies. You can almost smell the corpse lying in the alley in a B-movie detective story. Ripe with dangerous tremolo throb, surf provides the foundation for this unique and vibrant detective song. Ominous.
Surf (Instrumental)
It's great to hear this Secret Agent Man-ish number live. Power chords and whammy, and a throbbing bass line. "Oyster Wax" has lots of James Bond influence and a nice melodic feel.
Surf (Instrumental)
The cowboy rhythm, muted reverb, and deluxe surf chords really shine here! Guitarist Mark Stultz plays this with focus and precision, and a superb liquid flow.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Naked Piranha" is tribal, rhythmic, Spanish flavored, exotic, mysterious, and full of changes. The sound is urgent, fluid, powerful, and interesting. This song has power, big twang, drama, and a solid melody and structure, but it's the rhythmic power that drives it. Big Spanish imagery. I like it more each time I hear it. Very cool!
Surf (Instrumental)
"Mayan Sun Dance" features an exquisite acoustic near-tango guitar, accompanied by hand drums. It's pretty, moody, and exotic.
