Track by Track Review

Longhorn dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

A prancing good time dribbles from this cowboy surf jazz celebration. Lovely surf tone, fifties Nashville style, and big grins. "Longhorn" is simply wonderful!

Cyclops dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Cyclops" rocks with dribbling surf flair and visual writing. This is a splendid track, full of vibrant spirit and superb guitar work. Too cool!

Twist Man Easy dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Twist Man Easy" employs an easy cycling progression and a walking bass line to create a lazy afternoon feeling. A bit Spanish, and quite pleasing.

Mrs. Wong dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Cool drums, great whammy chords, and classic Asian structures. Much of "Mrs. Wong" straight surf, and in some ways, it's kinda jammy. That said, this track has the kind of hook that Jon and the Nightriders' "Surfin' Japanese" has, but much more relaxed. Very fun track.

Twist and Twang dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Twist and Twang" carries over from earlier Urban Surf Kings' arrangements. Rich tone and grumbly bass. Pretty fun!

Devil Ray dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Slow and tortured, with big guitar drama and lumbering drums. Heaped in Link Wray tradition, "Devil Ray" should have been titled "Devil Wray!" That tells you all you need to know!

Hey Eddie dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Hey Eddie" is dark, back alley dangerous, and just plain mean. Trembling tremolo, bluesy raunch, and primal Eddie Angel-isms - I assume that is the origin of the title.

Twang Gang dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Mixed differently than the rest of this album, "Twang Gang" is also more riff-rock than surf. Great drums, very cool whammy chords, structural nods to "Wipe Out," and more.

Teenage Walk dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Previously cut with The Wadadli Riders, "Teenage Walk" lumbers and charms. It's a bluesy progression and walking bass number with solid drums.

Rex Rides Again dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

Big fuzz and stomping drums drive this rock instro. "Rex Rides Again" is aggressive, with really great, dirty guitar.

Tipi Tone dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The melody here is very playful, and is delivered with superb tone. "Tipi Tone" sparkles and grins, but is not at all fluffy or gimmicky. Exceptionally good guitar work, and a very warm, friendly sound.

Big Boss Cowboy dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Cowboy rhythms, a bouncing beat, and fine guitar work. "Big Boss Cowboy" is a fine track for the open road, both because of its traveling beat, and it's splendid country gumption. Very nice!
