Peter Reese and the Pages - Beat In Germany Smash...! Boom...! Bang...!dotdotdot
artworkAmid a bunch of fine German beat tracks are 4 instros from their Hippy Hippy Shake album recorded live in 1964 with their roots in beat and surf. "Pages Rhythm" particularly is a cool track.

Track by Track Review

San Antonio Rose dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

This is a rippin' thumb tack piano instro treatment of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys' "San Antonio Rose." A great pumping bass line and rockin' drums jump beneath that great piano, which is an organ in the break. Very fun!

Slop Walk dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

"Slop Walk" liberates the melody from Little Richard's "Lucille" in an instro forum. The bass pumps, the guitar approaches surfability, and the piano rolls in great gobs of coolness. Very nice track.

Pages Rhythm dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Pages Rhythm" is a rompin' rocker employing the melody from The Fireballs' "Bulldog." Great surf lead rampages above tuff drums. The very high note muted reverb is something that only appeared in obscure surf instros. Plenty of energy here!

Jungle Beat dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

"Jungle Beat" uses a simple progression throughout, but it's pumping bass and piano in sync create a compelling tribal sound. Not melodic, but cool none the less.
