Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA | Another very adventurous album from Pozor Vlak, often blending psychedelic soundscapes with surf, and the compelling ugliness of Blue Cheer. Not at all trad, but really interesting.
Incidentally, I think the band's name comes from the signs at railroad crossings in Poland that mean "watch out for trains." |

Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
Pulsing and murky, this dark sounding track has an oddly uplifting rhythm and melody line. Only the wash of reverb makes it seem dark. "Sun City" is an aptly titled track.
Surf (Instrumental)
the grumble of the back track is at odds with the happy melody, creating a strange and magnetic sound. The shimmer and throb of the second guitar's psycho-acoustic vibrato and ambiance are quite something. With production as odd as Vibrasonic's (though completely different), "Menam Beach" seems a vibrant cross between psych and surf.
Surf (Instrumental)
This short, very ugly instro does not convey the feeling or image of of Peter Green's sound or style. Dirty, relentless, and perhaps what Blue Cheer would have done if they had been a surfband.
Surf (Vocal)
A ringing surf melody atop a dark rhythm, with a few vocal lines interspersed. It took a while for this to grow on me, but it did.
Senor Arbaff
Surf (Instrumental)
"Senor Arbaff" is a harsh punk thrash. A chord progression and loud power, with no melody and some vocal lines.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Fresh" is a psycho-surf track with an eerie aural quality and surf guitar. If demented disturbed murderers suddenly appeared on that wave with you, they would be listening to this! Stunning!
Surf (Instrumental)
Heavy dark sludge born of Blue Cheer and a terrible storm surf. Pure evil with baggies on! It's interesting how well surf and sludge can coexist!
Surf (Instrumental)
An odd melody for surf, a dark swirl of reverb, and a touch of optimism just peaking out from under the murk. A few lines from "Walk, Dont Run" are interspersed, and hand claps give this otherwise ugly track a surreal sound.
Surf (Instrumental)
Almost post-music noise in some ways, "Disko" is a long wash of sounds and pulses in a psycho setting. Hard to relate to surf at times, yet strangely attractive in a desperate trance sort of way.
Pistol Pete
Surf (Instrumental)
If you expect a cowboy epic or R&B relic, you are in for disappointment. "Pistol Pete" is a riff rocker with a dark sound and grodie aural quality.
Surf (Instrumental)
Sometimes psycho-acoustic, sometimes demented inversion of traditional surf, "Lumpi 3" is a fascinating rethink of the surf genre. Infectious rhythms and a wide aural landscape.
Surf (Instrumental)
Perhaps a bit western, "Ramona" is a bouncy and playful song with a catchy melody riff and strange swirling boominess. Unusual and very fun.
Surf (Instrumental)
Ugly feedback yields to fuzzy biker riffs. Likely inspired by Davie Allan, but not melodic like that. More punkoidal.
Surf (Instrumental)
An intriguing title for an aurally psychedelic twister, phased, swirled, pulsing, and surfable. "Pharmageddon" is a bad trip on a dangerous monster wave.
Phoenix
Surf (Instrumental)
Very dark and ugly and lo-fi, "Phoenix" is a punky trash rock distortion fest. Not memorable, but quite mean.
Surf (Instrumental)
This is a very interesting almost space rock swirl of excellent surf and psychedelic madness. Compelling, psycho-acoustic, and relentless in a nearly hypnotic way. Highly original and very engaging!
Kolibri
Surf (Instrumental)
Punk and fuzz and dark riff rock in a wholly ominous wash of sound. Riff rock without a melody, but effective darkness and danger.
