Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Brian Pool - The X-mas Album
|Finally, a band composition set from Brian Pool. There are some very cool instros here. While it's all demo, all Brian, it sure does beg the question "when is Big B gonna get a band together. Fine writing and thinking here. It's not really a Christmas album, more a Christmas Gift from Brian to the world or surf.|
Picks: The Joy Of Man - It's Christmas, Flight Of The Monarch, March Of Hearts, Dance Of The Winter Queen, Speedtrap, Space Buggy, The Catillion, The Singing Wire, Procession

The Joy Of Man - It's Christmas
Near Surf (Instrumental)
This nicely done arrangement is on the verge of surf, is warm and fluid, and sports some very nice and smooth guitar licks. On the soft side, "The Joy Of Man - It's Christmas" is inviting and warm.
The flutterbies surf the break at Natural Bridges with liquid fingers on the fret board. A little sad, quite scenic, and aquatic, "Flight Of The Monarch" is probably the nicest new composition from Brian Pool.
Cactus Surf (Instrumental)
Like a soft Ventures epic, "March Of Hearts" has a cactus feel and sports cool electric piano. It's an emotional number with a light heart and liquid smoothness.
Dance Of The Winter Queen
Soft Rock (Instrumental)
Lush romance flows from the melody and arrangement of this very pretty and slightly sad song. Very pleasurable.
Surf Punk (Instrumental)
Rockin' twang like a refugee from the Torpedoes, this track is solid and very cool! The infectious punkabilly beat and twangy guitar lines grab you. "Speedtrap" is a welcome track from the Big B!
Space Surf (Instrumental)
"Space Buggy" is a catchy and fun track with a friendly surfable sound and a cool structure. The melody line is simple and very warm, and the rhythm track bouncy and infectious. Excellent!
Demented Sideshow Surf (Instrumental)
"The Catillion" is a softish number with a keyboard featured prominently under the long smooth guitar lines. The semi-carnival edge and dissonant sounds are demented and beautiful at the same time. A very inventive song!
Soft Surf (Instrumental)
With a delicate air, "The Singing Wire" swims in an afternoon sun as spring nears. An interesting composition, this unusual song is pretty and a little disturbed too.
Near Surf (Instrumental)
Soft drama oozes from "Procession" like wine from a carafe. A bit noodly and Mediterranean, and a little intentional, it's also emotional in an unnatural way. I'm not quite sure why, but it made me uncomfortable to listen to. So, perhaps it's powerful in a get-under-your-skin kinda way. Delicate and spooky.
