Pollo Del Mar - Spring Breakdotdotdotdot
artworkI love future glimpses like this! Ferenc Dobronyi was kind enough to forward this CD-R of unreleased goodie to me. Some tracks scheduled for compilations, a couple of experiments, and ball game classics made surf masterpieces. Can't wait for these tracks to be released.
Picks: Time Is Tight, I Say A Little Prayer, Magyara, Crypto, Danse Macabre of the Sinister Minister, Star Spangled Banner, Take Me Out To The Ballgame

Track by Track Review

Time Is Tight dotdotdotdot
Memphis Surf (Instrumental)

Opening with a marvelous decaying delayed guitar chord, this quickly drops into a solid version with most unusual drums and a great quirky arrangement. This is not one of my fave Booker T. and the MG's tracks, but this version has immense charm. Great stuff.

I Say A Little Prayer dotdotdot
Elevator Surf (Instrumental)

Yes, really! Pollo Del Mar go slushy with a really tasty performance of Burt Bacharach's tune made famous by Pet Clarke. The narrated lyrics mid stream are too precious, and then there's that silly chorus. This is great fun! Destined for the OmOm Burt Bacharach tribute CD.

Magyara dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This marvelous Mediterranean line dance thing is too glorious. Fluid and folk grand, fun and very good listening. It's times like this when the writing power of this band is crystal clear. Destined for the "Instrumental Fire 2001" CD. Ferenc Dobronyi wrote it for his dad.

Crypto dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

In the key of PDM, this sports the angular writing and arranging we know and love as Pollo Del Mar. Fluid crosscurrent motion, mystery and quiet power. haunting and intense.

Danse Macabre of the Sinister Minister dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

taking a complete left turn, Pollo Del Mar produce a "psych-prog experiment for soundtrack use." Many unusual effects, a slow dramatic delivery, bells of the Devil's lair, and a magnetic sound. make up your own scene for this fine piece. A bit of dub, some brilliant psychedelic interplay and overlay, and a moody trip through the mall.

Star Spangled Banner dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

OK, so Jimi already did this. But, he didn't do it to try to play at a San Francisco Giants game. Gorgeous, slightly pompous, very reverent, and magical. Brings tears to your eyes, or maybe just makes you long for five dollar hot dog indigestion. It doesn't matter, it's entirely cool.

Take Me Out To The Ballgame dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A splendid reinvention of the theme to the game... inspired and fun, flirtatious and grin-bearing. Almost makes you want to sit for endless hours eating cold hot dogs... almost. Too cool!
