Planet Seven - Pleasurecraft Recovery Themedotdotdotdot
artworkThis is an advance CD-R burned from the master that will likely be issued in January '98. It was recorded by Wally Wave, once head of Santa Cruz's legendary surf band the Thongs. The often dreamt of but never realized merger of the space gloom of Hawkwind or D. C. 3 and surf has been realized here, with the heavy chunk and the shimmer blending with the theremin to create unnaturally wonderful surf instros, unique and powerful. This is just about the most refreshing instro CD so far this year, because it blends previously uncombined elements with surf, and achieves instantly striking results. Live, these guys are very powerful. This is a fine CD.

Track by Track Review

Crimewave (Crime Wave) dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Punkie and chunky with an intense whammified reverb lead playing a melodic line. Rhythmic and infectious, ominous and wet. Hot performance and grindy delivery. Very nice indeed.

Satan's Handbag dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

A set of slow surf chords, whammied slightly and beautifully, flow over a tribal backtrack that gradually gets chunkier. A fine surf melody line carries this track into the "fine job boys" column.

Blindsided (Blind Sighted) dotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Moderate pace, melodic coastal tune with a pleasant feel, retaining it's edge without sacrificing it's listenability.

Powerstrip dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Issue forth the energy one would expect from this title, this is a very surfy and chunky track. It has a lot of drama, and a mean edge. Great drums and a memorable melody.

Cervesa dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Vocal)

Fast and almost Torpedoes-like, this is a machine-gun assault with a fuzzed bottleneck lead guitar, and wailing vocals.

Double The Medication dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Great damped chords, dramatic chunk, fine edge and a mysterious melodic sense. A very simple but refreshing track. I found myself coming back to this for replays. A solid and powerful mid tempo song.

Lara's Theme dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Space theremin noises and dry chords open up the track, which yields to a dark space surf variation on this classic movie theme. Very unusual treatment. The contrast between the Hawkwind space grind and the melodic surf guitar creates an interesting tension.

Pleasurecraft R. T. (Pleasurecraft Recovery Theme) dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Flowing surf chords, slow pleasing pace, moody shimmering island imagery, and eerie atmospherics combine for a very pretty song.

Spectragraph dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Slow big production number, lively and edgy, mysterious and twangy. With textures varying from soft and lush to huge and chunky, this track meanders through several sad moods. Very nice track.

Panic Button (Back With Panic Button) dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Punkie fast and melodic. Similar to "Crime Wave" in sound. It has a whammy accented melody line that is quite effective, and a skate backtrack that underpins it with plenty of power.

Young And Useless dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Space howling theremin, surf guitar brilliance, and grindy rhythm guitar are the unlikely bedfellows the create this fine track, thick with edge and power without assaulting speed. Powerful and haunting.

Hickey Beach dotdotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

"What Ever Happened To Eddie" sorta chord intro, but only hinting of it. A chunky backtrack under a flowing surf melody beautifully played. This shimmers and grates at the same time. This is a melodic and powerful song, like Tommy Nuñes sitting in with Hawkwind circa '72. Cool track.

Whiteout (White Out) dotdotdot
Space Crunch Surf (Instrumental)

Thin guitars and whammy attack, a fuzz progression under whammy surfish guitar lead. Thrash and ready cool.
