Plan 9 - Beach Busterdotdotdotdot
artworkThis is a fine surf CD for several reasons. The musicianship is excellent, and the arrangements very cool, especially in the way they use the horn section. Trad based, but not pure. Recommended.
Picks: Beach Buster, Esmeralda Is Gone, My Heart Is Not For You, Atomic Revenge, Pacific Nightmare (On Zombies Beach), Last Chance (To Dance In Trance), Johnny Orbit, Run Chinese Run, One-Armed Bandit On A Three-Legged Horse, Swingin' Creeper, Badge Of Honour, The Whip

Track by Track Review

Beach Buster dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The title track is an almost middle eastern song with horn accompaniment. Fine dribbling surf, exotic melody not unlike the way some of the Treble Spankers' songs are constructed, and lots of energy. The break is lighter and vibrato shimmered. Great track!

Esmeralda Is Gone dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A slow, slightly Mexican sadness precedes and an infectious rousing surf romp. "Esmeralda Is Gone" is a very fine song with surf credentials and added Spanish feel via the horns. Very cool!

My Heart Is Not For You dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A pop melody and surf influenced tones, along with a very cool rhythm guitar, make this fluid song very interesting. A little sad, yet optimistic.

Atomic Revenge dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big surf here, with heavy damped rhythm guitar and dryer lead, and accompanied by well placed horn lines. A fine song with an infectious rhythm section and great surf feel.

Pacific Nightmare (On Zombies Beach) dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Slowish, dark, ominous... "Pacific Nightmare" is a very cool track, perhaps reminiscent of the slower Reef Rammers or Dead Men Don't Surf material. It's a very good track that brings you back again.

Last Chance (To Dance In Trance) dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a soft and very pretty song... at least until the too cool tribal tom toms come in, and the rhythm guitar begins to rhythmically chop. A fine lead line and a very jungle-like structure makes this a fine track!

Johnny Orbit dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Johnny Orbit" rides a longboard! "Pipeline"-esq in rhythm, "Johnny Orbit" sports a fine surf riff and really cool sound. Totally infectious!

Run Chinese Run dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Run Chinese Run" is a choppy almost rockabilly instro with quirky circular riffs and lots of energy. Very fun track!

One-Armed Bandit On A Three-Legged Horse dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Cowboys on surfboards ride the cactus trail. Great cowboy rhythm plucked out on damped reverb guitar, and a fine melody line that displays the open range well. Great stuff!

Swingin' Creeper dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great energy and chemistry as Plan 9 plays the Ventures' catchy song. This just may be the best cover yet of this infectious go-go tune. Ultra cool!

Badge Of Honour dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a cover of the Satan's Pilgrims' "Badge Of Honor" with lots of energy and speed, and solid surf sound. The catchy riff is well accented by the rhythm track and horn section. Way cool!

The Whip dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Frantics' "The Whip" is toughened up and romped out. Great energy and swingin' fun, surf sounds, and infectious delivery.
