The Penetrators - Locked and Loadeddotdotdotdot
artworkLocked and Loaded is the long awaited second CD release from Alabama's Penetrators, and it's head and shoulders above the first. Outstanding writing, well developed surf and spy instros, a variety of influences, and consistently strong sound. The lads have outdone themselves. The only crime is how long we all waited for this puppy. Excellent album.

Track by Track Review

Checkpoint Echo dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

An excellent spaghetti western flavored track from Tuscaloosa, Alabama's claim to fame. This is a tasty and rhythmic track, with excellent guitar tone and a very nice melody riff. With a little Alfredo sauce, it would be a main course at the pizzeria. Excellent.

50 Bucks A Midget dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great opening drums... "50 Bucks A Midget" is sideshow surf with a really crisp sound and an almost prancing joy about it. Richly reverbed, almost to the chunk limits established by the Woodies. Totally cool track.

Redlined dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Hot machine gun pick action and flying guitar fingers mark this exceptional track. My goodness, this totally shred. They musta had their Wheaties the morning this was cut! Blazing fast superfine playing on this surf riff rocker. The writing is really nice, and the performance deluxe. A great track.

Midnight Run dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a splendidly respectful cover of the Super Stock's "Midnight Run," rich with twang and reverb in all the right places. While it breaks no ground, it surely pleases the senses.

Deception Bay dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Splendid opening drama as the picture comes into focus. It's a misty island, with the fog lifting and a bit of hidden danger just beyond the beach where the lords of the new surf lurk in the thicket. If Jon and the Nightriders' slower shimmering pieces excite you, you're going to be very pleased with this stunning track.

Another Time, Another Place dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Delicate and rhythmic trad rhythm guitar under a sparkling lead... infectious and richly arranged. The melody and sound invokes cautiously optimistic emotions and wonderful sense of the curl.

Codename: Gypsy dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

In a slightly ska sifted Mediterranean mood, "Codename: Gypsy" sparkles with spies and spaghetti. Excellent double picking and an infectious rhythm.

Speed Bump dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A rapid quirky number with ample energy. This track just flies by, not because it's short, but because it's so cool. Catchy and fun.

Single-Malt Stomp dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The warm melody employed here is a little like "The Wind Beneath My Kilt," which is a good thing, since it's one of my favorite Penetrators tunes. A rousing time for all.

Triple-Dog Dare dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A rhythmic track, with really nifty lead and rhythm interplay in the bridge. I was surprised how much I liked this, initially giving it 3 stars. It grows on you, but so do warts. No, really, I like this a lot, and I was unexpectedly taken in by the infectious nature of the song. Very fine track.

Mariner 4 dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Tuscaloosa, Alabama is home to the Penetrators. They are a band that I just can't help but like, in part because they play with such honest fun and humor, and in such an open style. "Mariner 4" is fluid and more than a little enjoyable. Rock solid and way cool!

Locked and Loaded dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Ah, the title track. Heavy dangerous almost Dutch crunch sound, dramatic moodiness, and a perfectly minimal lead line... "Locked and Loaded"grows on you from a spares beginning through a complete composition. Excellent.

Southern Surf Syndicate Theme dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Southern Surf Syndicate Theme" is a tasty track from their forthcoming CD Locked And Loaded. It's very playful, and readily identifiable as theirs, with a very friendly melody line, and an infectious rhythm. The Penetrators are among the best along the Southern edge of the USA.
