The Overtones - S/Tdotdotdotdotdot
artworkIn 1979-80, Danny Amis formed a band in Minneapolis called the Overtones. It was a surf oriented band that met with some local success. Their lone single was issued on the highly respected Twin/Tone label. The single two vocal tracks, "Red Checker Wagon," and "Surfers Holiday." On the B-side was another vocal track called Surfer's Holiday. Also on the B-side was one fine instro which Danny took with him to the Raybeats, and still plays with Los Straitjackets. This single is quite rare, being pressed in limited quantities, and narrowly distributed. Only 423 copis were sold.

When Los Straitjackets played at KFJC the first time, I asked Danny to sign the sleeve of my copy. Danny was really surprised to see it. He wrote "So You're The One Who Bought This Record!..." I dare say that's a bit of an overstatement, but I've seen only a few in the ensuing years since it's release in 1980.

In any event, this is a fine little single, and well worth searching out, and if you find one, ask Danny to sign it, and tell him I sent you.

The Calhoun Surf dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is the original version of one of Los Straitjackets' (Danny Amis current band) standards. This version is powerfully melodic, and very cool. The song has been covered several times, including by the Thrusters and the Neon Spores. Amazing early take. Danny's writing style is fluid and catchy. A must have historical track.
