The Outsiders - The Showdowndotdotdotdot
artworkThis CD from Sweden's Outsiders is not as crisply recorded as the other, and the music is more twang and less cowboy surf. Some really good writing, and a couple of tracks that fall into the essential category. None of that is negative, but merely distinguishes The Showdown from Outsiders On The Run. It's hard not to like this, with it's pony ride surf trip feel and well developed instrumentals. Recommended.

Track by Track Review

New Outfit dotdotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

A funky bass line and ultra cool plucked surf tones dribbling a beautiful riff with a catchy Percolator kinda feel. I really like the delicacy of this track, as well as the cool backtrack. Great!

Peacemaker dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Trashy thrashy glissandoes and guitar riffs, twangy and chunky, and like an intense version of a Japanese Ventures tune with the Oriental removed. Great sax, and intense sound.

Caveman dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Tribal drums and rumbly thunder with vibrato and reverb, this is a simple throbbing and infectious track that catches you and holds you hostage. Raspy sax, and some real relentless magic.

Moonshine Rider dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Military drums and an Indian melody line, and some rich twango. "Moonshine Rider" tonally sounds like it could be from '63. An interesting slice of music.

Stompin' At The Bar dotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Polka anyone? Great grimy fun, this is a real prancing number ready for a hoe-down in the new barn, Sally Mae!

Straight Jacket dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Moderately paced chunky monkey twang and military march, with raging sax. Intense, adventurous, and nicely chunked.

El Caballero Negro dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Cowboy beat and western twang, open range adventure, and an almost Hellbenders feel. Pretty cool stuff to say the least, with an infectious rhythm and scenic guitar line.

Highway Man dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Banditos lay in wait for the stage as "Highway Man" threatens just around the next bend. Big whammy chords and chunky glissandoes, and a cowboy melody.

Ridin' South dotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

A rolling military/cowboy beat with an Al Caiola kinda melody. Saucy sax, rich scenery, and open land adventure.

The Undertaker dotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

After the gunfight, "The Undertaker" equalizes every fallen hero and villain. Big twang and reverb, and a bit of a dramatic structure. Interesting arrangement, with dry chops and whammy chords.

El Hobo dotdotdotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

With a drum beat like the Atlantics, this rhythmic track rocks and sways and rides a pinto into a setting sun. Warm and very infectious. Remarkably enjoyable, with really nice balance between lead and rhythm. Great track!

The Showdown dotdotdot
Cowboy Surf (Instrumental)

Dribbling slow guitar and cymbals open this dramatic scene setter. The guitar lines are round and twangy, with a nice riff and an interesting arrangement, plus some tasteful sax.
