The New Dimensions - Souldotdotdot
artworkPerhaps the rarest and weakest of the albums from The New Dimensions, Soul is nonetheless worth checking out. There are none of the magic moments of "Failsafe," "Cat On A Hot Foam Board ," or "Avalanche," but it's still clearly interesting music from an illusive and very cool band.
Picks: Soul Out, Soul Breakout, Soul Surf, Big Soul Beat, The Soul, Monkey Soul

Track by Track Review

Soul Out dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Low down sax and piano front "Soul Out," with surf guitar carrying melody. It's a slow moving track for The New Dimensions. Not their best track by a long shot, but substantially interesting. Relatively ambient recording/mixing gives it a less powerful sound.

Soul Breakout dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Dick Dale-esq number with the lead guitar a little too low in the mix. Not at all melodic, but quite a surf jam of the garage variety with tasteful piano break in the middle. Despite the absolutely crappy drums sound, it's a cool number to rumble with the greasers by.

Soul Surf dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a piano and guitar riff number with a cruisin' feel and some mighty quick pickin'. Tape delay replaces reverb on the lead guitar, and the lack of focus leaves it in the jam category. Having said that, it's quite listenable and a solid example of surf rhythm jams that had an attraction. Works really well.

Big Soul Beat dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Big Soul Beat" is virtually the Strangers' "Caterpillar Crawl." The reverb adds grode danger, and the chunky rhythm brings out the seamy side. Very ominous and cool.

The Soul dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The Rhythm Kings' "The Soul" is done in a very moody manner. It's surprisingly cool and dangerous. Piano, guitar, and sax in the lead. The mood is almost morose.

Monkey Soul dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Muted, reverbed, super-high notes open this jammy number. The guitar is buried in the mix, which is too bad, because it really needs to be out front here. Piano rockin', great guitar work, and saucy sax, with their signature bass and drums action.

Soul Slide dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A standard R&B riff with great piano and surf guitar deep in the mix. "Soul Slide" is really just a jam - not particularly melodic. For my money, it's the piano that makes this work at all.
