The Neptunas - Scratch 'N' Surfdotdotdot
artworkIt's really hard not to love the 'Tunas, even if you think the world needs to be perfect. They have this immediate ability to suck you into their camp, like when you see your child in the high school play. Nothing seems to matter except the innocent unassuming unpretentious fun they are having. The 'Tunas don't play well. They don't ever quite get in tune. They also aren't like a trio of Mrs. Millers. They're surf babes celebrating their fun via their band, and they simply don't care about being great or being stars. I love 'em dearly! This is their first CD, and it's packed with 14 wonderful surf tunes. Pamita, Leslita, & Toastita have once again risen to the occasion in their joyous way. 30 years from now, when the paleomusicological know-it-alls write about the great surf boom of the nineties, they will probably overlook the Neptunas. That will not diminish the warmth they have given us all, nor the value of their just simply being there.

Chicken Of The Sea dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Strangers In The Night" meeting on bellyboards, resoundingly attracted, inseparably repulsed, magnetically rejected, no room for surfer with good taste, only surfers that taste good. A chunky tune as only the 'Tunas could do. Minor fun in a major way.

Frr Bikini dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

No, it's not miss spelled - after all,Pamita Neptuna is a teacher of little ones in her other life. It defines the pronunciation... almost Germanic. Hinting of tentativeness, hesitant - nearly halted drumming, and grindy guitar. A fine utterance from a garage down your street.

Hot Wheels dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Tribal drums, and an unusual melody with a quaint haunted sound. Chunky, chanted exuberance, and total femme banal... a very infection glimpse into the mind's eye of the estrogen set.

Nepton dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A low down track with a melancholy melody line, and a sprinkling inkling of tandem guitars. A very nice track.

Hallowave dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Uh-oh, here come the trick-or-treat frr bikinis, ready to scare the urge right out of you. It's laid back sound is a ruse disguising it's evil intent. Very cool!

Lou Surfer's Woody dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A fine bass line, and a funny melody line, and a rhythmic off beat nature makes this a signature descriptor of their sound - slightly off, totally honest, and endearing. What fun, especially as it speeds up towards the end. Bitchin'

The Persistence Of Surf dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a fine tune, written in such a way that it is both natural and unnatural, and melody and discordant. It has a haunting tribal almost gothic sound. Like the sea crying after it washed away the beach, but didn't mean to. The quirky melody is cool.

Hai Karate dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This has been in their set for quite a while... it's rhythmic, but none too melodic... Dedicated to the cheesy cologne of course.

Cannibal Luau dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

With unseen dangers lurking in the barbecue pits at the luau, this is the surf equivalent of a canker and poi salad. Chunky and baring a strange melody line that seems at odds with the rest of the track. Intriguing, but threatening.

Drag Stripper dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A bobbing head in the rear window of life, this is a funny changling of a tune that issues forth images of unearthly creatures of the night driving fast cars.

Salt-Water Proof Mascara dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Always the slaves to fashion, it was only a matter of time until the 'Tunas found surf-proof makeup. A rhythmic and odd tune that creeps into the corners of your secret purse, and stays there.

Spoker Boogie dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A nice little ditty, rhythmic and poignant, having a 'Tuna sound and feel, complete with a minor key in a minor key - no, I didn't typo that, their sound is like a double minor key... Fundango.

Bat Train dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Ah, the shouted brilliant "oi oi oi" of the 'Tunas at sea. Chunky, rhythm driven interpretation of the TV theme, strained through Leslita Neptuna's darkest flashback, and chopped by the lovely Pamita and the awesome Toastita.

Mystery Track dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Fine surfisms, from the 'Tuna can, so to speak. This is an extra track, untitled on the CD. It is thick and just fine.
