Billy Mure - Super Sonic Guitars In Hi-Fidotdotdot
artworkBilly Mure was a great player, and as session guys of the day went, he rocked more than most, but he's still mostly like Buddy Merrill. A handful of cool tracks here, and a lot of ho-hum!
Picks: Supersonic, Malaguena, 12th Street Rag

Track by Track Review

Supersonic dotdotdotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

"Supersonic" is a romping guitar boogie with a rockabilly beat. Billy Mure's playing is fast and fun, zipped with energy, and flawless too.

Caravan dotdotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington's classic "Caravan" is a romp in the not too-loud-way rock'n'roll was often recorded at major studios. Spunky, infectious, and fun for the whole family!

Miserlou dotdotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

This light weight version of "Miserlou" features bongos to spice it up, but otherwise it's arranged very similarly to Buddy Merrill's version.

My Little Grass Shack In Hi-fi dotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Harry Owens, Johnny Noble's "I've Found A Little Grass Skirt (For My Little Grass Shack In Hawaii)" originally surfaced in 1934. Billy Mure takes it quite a distance from the islands. His take is more light country than Polynesian pop or rock. All fluff, no stuff!

Cherokee dotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Undulating exotic drums dominate this version of Ray Noble's "Cherokee." It owes a lot to big band swing and guitar boogies.

Tabu dotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Margarita Lecuona / Bob Russell's "Tabu" is done in an upbeat and non-exotic fashion. The melody's flexibility is attested to by the large number of covers in many styles. Billy Mure gives it a light arrangement. Bongos keep the exotica faith, but otherwise it's fairly pedestrian.

Malaguena dotdotdotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

"Malaguena" is an exceptionally flexible piece of music. Billy Mure's take on it is very much like Buddy Merrill's, but wit a bit more edge. Verging on rock'n'roll, this can capture you for a moment or two if you don't keep your guard up! The double picked madness is pretty cool too.

Chopsticks Guitar dotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Fun fodder for guitar workouts, and piano too, Euphemia Allen's "Chopsticks" takes a fun excursion through the rocking (as in chair) world of back porch jammin'. All fun, but forgettable except for the cool tremolo passages.

Sleepy Time Gal dot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Slow and slushy in a jazz guitar style, complete with the requisite mindless runs, moves easily across the background... ho-hum!

12th Street Rag dotdotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Rock and twenties ragtime collide with ease as Billy Mure has a great time with "12th Street Rag." Spunky, with great drums!

Guitar Boogie dotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Yup, another circular guitar boogie shuffle. Well done, but I'll stick with The Virtues' version, thank you very much!

Sheik Of Araby dotdot
Guitar (Instrumental)

Lots of guitar chokes and slides and chop chords done with extremely low energy. Too light to rock, but still fun.
