The Monks - Let's Start A Beatdotdotdot
artworkThe Monks were pretty edgy for a US band of servicemen stationed in Germany. They were minor legends in '66. They played for the first time in 30 years at Cave Stomp 1999, and were just as raw and primal as ever. This disc was cut live there, with all the honesty and immediacy that live recordings can bring. Rock solid hard driving garage punk from another era as fresh as if it was just invented. Primal and essential listening.
Picks: Blast Off, Monk Jam

Blast Off dotdotdot
Space (Instrumental)

Inspired by "Telstar," but there is where the comparison ends. Mechanized syncopated insanity over a repetitious chunka chunka rhythm track, a count down, a guitar break, and more chunka chunka. It all ends going up and up and up the scale to the climax.

Monk Jam dotdotdotdot
Garage Jam (Instrumental)

Made up on the spot, this monstrous jam thunders with huge distorted bass and screaming guitars and keys. Cacophony and mayhem rule as the Monks plunder the night. No melody required as they howl at the mechanized moon. Geez!
