Mister Neutron - Red Triangledotdotdotdot
artworkThis is a superb CD from a writing pint of view, and it's very well played too. I think this is the strongest of Mister Neutron's releases. The only thing keeping this from 5 star status in uneven and uncomplimentary production values that limit its obvious underlying power. Remixed, this could make a really bold statement. Quite by mistake, I missed reviewing Red Triangle when it was released in 2006.
Picks: Comanchero, The Wedge, Submariner, Danger Diabolic, Super Constellation, The Casbah, Subterfuge, Attack Of The Sea People, Neutron Stomp

Track by Track Review

Comanchero dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

With cool Spanish chords and a galloping beat, "Comanchero" travels across your senses with and engaging and satisfying melody accompanied by dramatic bull fight trumpet. Whammy chords and drama are the watchwords here. I must confess to liking this a lot, especially the superbly pure drums.

The Wedge dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a tastefully done cover of Dick Dale's song he liberated from Al Hazan. This is paced slightly slower than Dale's version, but seems much lower energy. The melody has been altered some in ways that make it seem like errors in translation were made.

Submariner dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a fast romping number with cool glissandos and flying Spanish surf guitars. More moody than ,melodic, "Submariner" races across a cactus plain, or perhaps under the sea as suggested by the title. Big energy.

Danger Diabolic dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Danger Diabolic" is a wonderful song with a solid melody and rich Dick Dale-esq flair. The heavy chunk, spectacular richness, and very powerful delivery really make this worth seeking out. Very dark lead guitar languishes on the right, opposite bass phantomed on the left. Only the odd mix keeps this from being a 5 star track.

Super Constellation dotdotdotdot
Desert (Instrumental)

Spunky and rhythmic, with a real sense of you car with the top down on a highway through a cactus valley, and warm textures. Mister Neutron give lots of energy to this rocker, with reverb added and a very cool beat. With ample changes, "Super Constellation" bears repeated enjoyment.

The Casbah dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Gaminiam and his Orientals' catchy "Come With Me To The Casbah" gets a tuff surf treatment with edge and a basic rock 'n' roll gruffness. Often called "The Casbah" or "Casbah," this is a fun little riff rocker that Los Straitjackets do so nicely, which seems at least in part the source of the arrangement.

Subterfuge dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Subterfuge" is an interesting track with a classy and mysterious melody line. The power of the track comes from strong tone and playing, and great drums offset by droning bass. Huge splash chords complete the picture. The power of this track is minimized by the lead guitar on the right instead of in the center.

Attack Of The Sea People dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Opening with the mystery of Arabian mystery, "Attack Of The Sea People" is powerful and intense. The lead seems a bit low at times, especially compared to the augmenting guitar chords, but this sure is a cool song. Its emotionally charged melody and the sound of the Middle East remind me some of The Astroglides, but less punky.

Neutron Stomp dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great drumming and long glissandos create a dramatic wash. Once into the song, "Neutron Stomp" gets more modern-jazzy. I liked the beginning a whole lot more than the song, and the drums best of all.
