 | 'Bout time for a new release from Canada's Mark Brodie. The Metalunas' play a splashy and upbeat brand of surf. Oh, out past the end of the last track is a really bad (as in fun and cool) vocal version of "Theme From A Summer Place." Yikes! |
Picks: The Curse Of Pier 13, Scooby Doo, Surf Party, Mojo, Plastics For 500, Igor, Death Comes At Midnight, Ghosts Of The Wild Frontier, The Cat's Pajamas, Munster Mosh, Crash, Godzilla Stomp, Go-Go Gremlin
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
Right from the reverb crash, "The Curse Of Pier 13" is a surf shredder, with exuberant shouts from the band. Fire and double picked power surges, and a great surf riff.
Surf (Instrumental)
The theme from the TV series gets the reverb drench treatment. Aside from the obvious nods to canine superheroes, "Scooby Doo" rocks and surfs mightily. It's amazing how well this works double picked and twanged out.
Surf (Instrumental)
This spunky Dunham / Beverly composition stands up well under Mark Brodie's assault. Fiery, aggressive, edgy, and thoroughly cool.
Surf (Instrumental)
Funky bass and hand claps with surf guitar lurking in the distance. It's quite a cool tune, but the mix hides the power of the guitar. Lots of fun and suave coolness.
Surf (Instrumental)
This is a tuff surf cover of Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet's rhythmic wave rider "Plastics For 500, Igor." Well balanced with great drums.
Surf (Instrumental)
Eerie organ warns of coming danger. Vibrato shudder and pick slides ooze spookiness. The organ is the main culprit as "Death Comes At Midnight" knocks at your door.
Ghosts Of The Wild Frontier

Surf (Instrumental)
Cowboys chunk and dodge the curl on the longest board they can find. Chunky and splashy, surfy and reverb laden. "Ghosts Of The Wild Frontier" is fun, infectious, and high energy, with great drums.
Surf (Instrumental)
'Meow!" The Hank Marvin-esq guitar is reverbed, the "Feel So Good" bass line is catchy, and the rambling surf guitar is warm and groovy. This is an unusual piece, and quite cool.
Surf (Instrumental)
Grodie guitar, reverbed adventure, lurking danger, and optimistic fuzz. Big whammy twango, and unusual structures keep it fresh. "Münster Mosh" is not a Münsters theme takeoff.
Surf (Instrumental)
The Creations' hard charging reverb monster "Crash" is reborn with all the spirit you'd expect from the Metalunas. It's a great melody, and these guys do it right.
Surf (Instrumental)
Not at all monstrous, "Godzilla Stomp" is a sparkling and happy adventure on the back of a friendly serpent. Splashy and sporting a creative and catchy melody.
Surf (Instrumental)
With the "Midnight Run" rhythm and a twango lead, "Go-Go Gremlin" has all the beginners riding high on the crest as the veterans look onward. Quite cool.
