Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA | The Low Tides display a gutsy style and attack, with the unusual use of trumpet where rhythm guitar usually is. These live demos are well played, but the production values are dreadful, and obscure the power of the performance. I'm looking forward to more from these folks. |
Picks: The Great Behemoth, Pipeline, Surf Beat
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
"The Great Behemoth" is an intriguing spy vs. surf instro. Mostly a riff driven song, with a trumpet lead melody. Dark and grodie.
Surf (Instrumental)
A very rough extended glissando opens an otherwise throaty version of the definitive surf instro. The trumpet and guitar trade duty well, and there's a lot of dark energy. The arrangement is very good.
Surf (Instrumental)
Dick Dale and his Del-tones' early riff surf masterpiece "Surf Beat" is darkly bludgeoned with trumpet replacing rhythm guitar. The chunk of the rhythm may be gone, but there's no shortage of toughness.
