Long Boards - Big Surfdotdotdotdot
artworkThe Longboards play really dark and heavy surf, and they play it fast and loud. What a great release! The track titles are a guess past Big Surf because the CD names from the net aren't quite the same as the sleeve listing, and the way the sleeve listing works, there is either a missing track, or you have to guess at the two word title from separate entries. Not that it matters to your ears. This is a pummeling workout!

Track by Track Review

Moment Of Truth dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Larry Weed's "Moment Of Truth" played the way Dick Dale might do it, with shredding speed and fire, but with more reverb and a heavy rich thunder. Muted lines bridge the two halves, and machine gun glissandos do the rest! Yikes!

Requiem For Link Wray dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

As you might imagine, this is aimed at and darkened by Link Wray. The track is so low down, it sounds almost pitch-shifted at times. Grodie and nasty.

Downhill dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Wow, this really drives hard. The swirling organ adds a weird sense of liquid danger to the spitting glissandos and raging drums. Deep bass and lots of reverb complete the picture. Very heavy!

Jeff Phillips dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Oh my goodness! "Jeff Phillips Journey To The Stars" is giant. The power and pummeling bass and tribal drum thunder support huge guitar thrills. Midway, there's an almost delicate passage. I expected

Journey To The Stars dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a huge cover of the Ventures' "Journey To The Stars." It's very heavy and thunderously powerful. You know the song. The Longboards do it with size!

Banzai Washout dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is easily the darkest cover of Steve Douglas' classic "Banzai Washout." Big whammy chords, dark reverb double picking, and thundering backup. Very powerful!

Big Surf dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a pretty unusual version of Sentinals' highly dangerous "Big Surf." major whammy twang and dark tone make this a truly dangerous track. This is one of those very simple compositions that proves the power of minimalism.

Wall Ride dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a monster of thundering green room terror. The rumbling of the drums and bass and the dangerous imagery are very powerful! Great stuff!

Guinchy dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This classic theme ("Dark Eyes") is converted nicely to a surf romp. Rich with reverb and dark surf energy, and sparkled with splashy rhythm guitar. Quite large!

Toro dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

I thought perhaps this would be Link Wray's "El Toro," but alas it's an original dark surf crusher that portrays high risk surf and dangerous rocks. Heavy and highly energized.

Roll Out dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Intense and relentless, "Roll Out" drives the thundering tubes faster and more dangerously. The pummeling backtrack really power this track.

Desert Sky Beach dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Delicate guitars carry the image duties well. "Desert Sky Beach" must be a place where the sun blisters the skin and the salt curl burns in the scrapes the rocks have donated to your body. Picturesque, dramatic, and visual.
