Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Laika and the Cosmonauts - Amazing Colossal Band

 | 4th album from these Finlanders. They have moved more into keyboard orientation, much more spy music, exotica, and European sound. On this CD, they remind me of the (London) Tornados, but without Joe Meek at the controls. Just a couple of surf tracks this time, but they are well worth the price of admission. Dig the cool cover of Davie Alan's "Skaterdater." |

Track by Track Review
Delayrium
Euro (Instrumental)
Tweaky churny pumpy theme music... not very interesting, but very playful.
Euro Surf (Instrumental)
Thick and swirly Euro instro, with a great melody and a slightly muddy sound. The overall effect is of an eighties instro with a surf rhythm guitar pattern played dry. Very nice effect, almost synthetic and bubbly.
Euro (Instrumental)
Exotic percussion a la "Mission Impossible" with organ lead and a playful slushy feel.
Euro (Instrumental)
Indian almost sitar feeling, this eerie track is very ambient and reverbed out, as if recorded in a warehouse. The guitar line is repetitious but effective. More a backwash of sound than a song.
Euro (Instrumental)
John Barry's film score presented in shimmering vibrato against an almost carnival organ. Interesting and spooky.
Euro (Instrumental)
Euro almost "Telstar" feel, with the organ in the lead over a rhythmic backtrack. Not their most interesting, but one of their more unusual tracks. It is melodic and friendly.
Euro (Instrumental)
Laurie Johnson's TV series theme is brightly performed, though it's a little too hokey for my taste. Pure fun, with mostly organ lead work.
Euro (Instrumental)
A ska beat and a pumping bass support a whirling organ tune. Floating and dramatic.
Euro (Instrumental)
Great fuzzy guitar under plucky lead guitar twisted with intense whammy. Thick and urgent in a non threatening way. Chunky, fun, with great energy and a sense of humor.
Euro (Instrumental)
Slow silky guitar with a moody distant sound and deep full track reverb. Quite pretty.
Euro (Instrumental)
Exotic percussion, round guitar tone more like the Laika of old. Excellent melody line, lots of energy, and plenty of smooth twang over an infectious beat. Bright and cheerful.
Euro (Instrumental)
The "Oahu Community Correctional Center" must be a sparkling place to be incarcerated. Bouncy Polynesian fluid music, playfully oozing with tropical paradise. Too fun.
Get Carter
Euro (Instrumental)
Moody floaty organ film score stuff, with exotic percussion and organ lead.
Euro (Instrumental)
Organ against a spirited backtrack. Flighty and breezy, with fluffy energy.
Euro (Instrumental)
Shimmering guitar beauty over exotic tribal drums slowly providing a jungle rhythm. Very pretty, and full of charm. A little serious, but always endearing.
Surf (Instrumental)
Davie Allan and the Arrows' glorious theme from "Skaterdater" (the fuzz rock version) played with vigor and reverence. No one does Davie better than Davie, but this is a mighty good track with drive and a smooth fuzz drive, plus great rhythm chunk and drums.
