Leopold Kraus Wellenkapelle - 15 Black Forest Surf Originalsdotdotdotdot
artworkMore original and fascinating sounds from one of the more original bands around. Their last album was fun and groundbreaking, and this one continues to push the edges of the envelope. Surf and go-go at a carnival with popcorn and too much fun. If surf had survived into the go-go era, it might have sounded like this. This is a long way from traditional surf, but it sure is cool. The lone vocal on this disc is "Stromgitarrenmadchen."

Track by Track Review

En Route Pour La Gloire dotdotdotdot
Combo Surf (Instrumental)

Great surf guitar plays against organ over a rhythmic backtrack. "En Route Pour La Gloire" is mighty fun and infectious, and the melody original and inviting. The guitar work is very good!

Titisee-Twist dotdotdot
Armchair Surf (Instrumental)

With a kind of carnival Goldfinger feel, "Titisee-Twist" pumps with a rockin' sixties go-go boots sound, and drips with fun.

The Jump Of The Deer In The Valley Of Hell dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Slushy whammy chords and moody bass, glissandos run with a fun melody in this surf romp. "The Jump Of The Deer In The Valley Of Hell" is more than just cool, it's fun and inviting and memorable. The Del Shannon organ lines in the break run alongside surf chop chords. Very cool!

Hier Kommit Christina dotdotdotdot
Pop Surf (Instrumental)

The backtrack to "Hier Kommit Christina" is very playful, and the surf guitar leads just right. At first hearing, this seemed pretty lightweight, but it grew on me pretty quickly. Very nice track!

Es Leben Die Uskoken dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The backtrack reminds me of Hobo Cop, and the rolling feel of the tack does as well. Almost spaghetti western melody and psycho-swirl keys combine for a brilliant track. Magnificent!

Melodien In Blei dotdotdotdot
Combo Surf (Instrumental)

This slowish surf instro is romantic in its own way, and engaging without being dominating. The muted chords play really well against the organ. Very nice track.

The Barber's Theme dotdotdot
Go-Go (Instrumental)

"The Barber's Theme" is borrowed in part from "The Barber Of Seville," but is pretty snappy as a modern go-go combo piece. Bouncy and fun.

DJ Opossum dotdotdot
Surf Pop (Instrumental)

"DJ Opossum" is quite a hybrid, with surf guitar, go-go rhythm, fanciful organ, and a pumping pop beat. Quite fun.

Flydt's Ring dotdotdotdot
Space Combo Spy Surf (Instrumental)

"Flydt's Ring" is somewhat moody in a spy sorta way. Slightly sad, yet rhythmic and infectious. The composition overall is attractive and energetic. The electro swirls in the middle against the big chords create an ominous and powerful sound. Way cool!

Gladiatroren dotdotdot
Rhythm (Instrumental)

"Gladiatroren" is an odd track with a kind of carnival twango and cutesy rhythm. It seems more about the rhythm and the sound than a melody.

Do The Duck dotdotdot
Tweaked Combo Lounge (Instrumental)

Not a quack in sight (or sound), though the keyboard wah-wah notes implicate the duck in this bouncy and fun track. While pretty darn fun, I think it's too gimmicky.

Lothar '99 dotdotdot
Psycho Surf New Wave (Instrumental)

Great drums and rhythm, and a lot of energy, with a sound born somewhat of the eighties. "Lothar '99" is more of a progression than a song, but it sure is fun. I usually don't like things with this kind of structure, but I do like this. Big grin.

Schwarzmaler dotdotdotdotdot
Rhythmic Surf (Instrumental)

This is a completely original arrangement of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black." Great double picked guitar, cool big twang, intense energy, a surf beat, and thick space arranging. reverb crashed throughout, and infectious rhythm. Wonderful!

Oh, My Deer dotdotdotdot
Pop Surf (Instrumental)

An inviting melody line and rhythm guitar, a very playful and carefree arrangement, and simply fun sound. "Oh, My Deer" is a very poppy song with an infectious rhythm and arrangement. Totally cool!
