KB and the Riptides - Give Us A Gig!dotdotdot
artworkKB and the Riptides play very straight forward surf instros, but with a sound that straddles trad and modern sustain and distortion. the CD-R says it was recorded in the studio live, with no overdubs, but I'm guessing these tracks come from a soundboard tape, because the drums are too big (kick especially) and the track is over compressed to compensate. You can hear the compressor breathe. If it was studio, I hope they didn't pay for the engineering! They vocally rock out on the Temptations' "My Girl."

Track by Track Review

Peter Gunn dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A fairly straight treatment of Henry Mancini's TV theme, with big swirled guitar and very modern tone. Properly recorded and mixed, this just might be a pretty cool track.

Diamond Head dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This straightforward treatment is very serviceable. It reminds of some eighties Japanese versions, with modern tone and reverent arranging. I like the way the generations are bridged with simplicity and reverence.

Shake-N-Stomp dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

On of Dick Dale's early singles that's getting significant attention these days, "Shake-N-Stomp" is presented here in a straight but loud arrangement. This likely rocks live!

Hava Nagila dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Based naturally enough on Dick Dale's single, KB and the Riptides play it loud and hard with thunder. It's a solid, if not adventurous cover.

Tequila dotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Chuck Rio's over-covered Mexican anthem is arranged with what sounds like the girls singing "do do do" to deliver the rhythm. It's really guitar distortion or keyboard weirdness. hard to tell, it's so buried in the sound wash. Pretty fun.

Rumble dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Link Wray's monster delivered with fuzz and sustain - what else? Solid if not particularly original.

Bathsheba Soup Bowl dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Bathsheba Soup Bowl" is a very cool original, with splashy guitar lines and throbbing bass. It's melodic and very surf worthy. Oh for a decent recording!

Surf (Instrumental)

There's an unlisted guitar solo number at the end of the disc. It's a very pretty number, with a fluid finger style delivery on surf guitar. It has a calming sound. Quite nice!
