Track by Track Review
Tommy James may have been a studio lizard of the first order, but he did produce some of the most creative effects on any hit singles anywhere. He also laid down the surf-based "Thunderbolt" as a single B-side to "Hanky Panky," both recorded in '63 and issued on Snap records, then reissued on Roulette to become a national hit in 1966. This is one of those frustrating recordings that clearly would have been a great surf record had Tommy used reverb and played full tilt instead of studio quiet and dry. The track lies somewhere between the grand pre-surf work of Jody Reynolds, the surf idiom, and the dry pre-psych / post surf sound of studio sessions. After 30 years, this is still an infectious single, and fits into a surf set just fine.
