The Hydrotones - Hydrophonics USAdotdotdot
artworkThis is an odd CD for me. There's almost nothing surf about it, and many tracks are non melodic, yet the rest call to something primal, and seem to portray a kind of impending danger. The Hydrotones are Bill Bechtel - sax, Will Bongo - guitars / keys, Sean Collins - drums, and Noah Red, bass.

Track by Track Review

Espionage dotdotdot
Sax (Instrumental)

This is a heavy textured progression based song that beckons to danger. The sax lead is more about angular danger than melody. The effect is a thunderous wave of ominous edge with an out of control sax refusing to submit.

Rabblerouser dotdotdot
Sax (Instrumental)

"Rabblerouser" features a heavy chunk and crunch backtrack and sax fills meandering a nasty skyline. Aggressive and relentless.

Theme From An Imaginary Cartoon dotdotdot
Sax (Instrumental)

A great dry textured chop chord backdrop churns under a whistling tone. Thick textures and dangerous sci-fi edge.

Escape From Tiki Island dotdotdot
Sax (Instrumental)

The sea gently rolls ashore while birds chirp and percussion comes forth. "Escape From Tiki Island" is a drum solo with sound effects. Most such tracks are boring to the max, but the tribal air of this track keep it interesting.

Rubout In Ybor dotdotdot
Sax (Instrumental)

Heavy sub-metal chunk chords and bass rumble under a sax that plays a forbidding line. The rhythmic values are very effective. The edgy guitar is ultra modern. I'm not sure why, but this track brought me back for a second listen.

Tamla's Gone Bonkers dotdotdot
Sax (Instrumental)

Slow dry chops ooze hints of "A Shot In The Dark" while the sax honks of a rumble on the docks. Pretty cool track.

Pachyderm Picasso dotdotdotdot
Sax (Instrumental)

Metal elephants dry chop and grind under edgy guitar until the break comes along, which has an elongated exotic feels to it, almost island adventurous. Very nice track.

Tsunami dotdotdot
Sax (Instrumental)

Slowly rising from the rain storm, "Tsunami" meanders an afternoon gloom before settling into a kind of adventure that hints of Baja and mariachis. A fine track.
