The Human Tornados - S/Tdotdotdotdot
artworkA pedigree doesn't hurt. Bill Schunk was the co-founder and lead guitarist with Beat Rodeo (I still love the Coyote 12 inch "Do You Mean It"). Pete DeCosta was with Bobby Radcliff and Kristi Rose and the Midnight Walkers, as well as the Walking Clampetts. Ted Lawrence was guitarist with the Supertones as well as Purple Knif. Their music is also slated to be included in the upcoming film Anthem. With influences ranging from the Shadows (melodic sense, not archetypical echoplex twang), the Ventures (pristine sound, not bored again chameleons), the Sentinals (Tommy Nuñes melodic sensibility), and Antonio Carlos Jobim (not the rabid approach of Brazil 2001, but rather the measured intricacy of the Raybeats. This CD is very melodic, and well produced. The seasoned talent allows the players to make their sacred noise without leaning on volume or speed. Like the Aqua Velvets, they have an imagery in their work that carries it far beyond the mere limits of instro. It's more than soundtrack, much more than ambient. It commands and soothes. very good CD.

Pugsakuk dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

What a heavy number, from it's groaning low-E grindage, through it's stinging reverbed accents, and it's relentless surf drums. Moderately paced surf monster for your worst nightmare storm surf...think Waimea on a 50 foot day. Very powerful.

The Man From N.O.R.K.A. dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A pretty strait ahead Challengers-like number, but without the hokiness, and with more weight. Semi-melodic, dramatic, and fit for a soundtrack. Cool

I Surf In Black dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Slow gently rippling waves licking at your toes. A slow paddle in on a nearly flat sea at sunset. Picturesque and stunning. I find myself drawn to this track repeatedly. Really nice. A great title for the plaid shirt and Doc Martin refugees newly arrived on the surf scene who still need some hint of the angst they don't even realize that they've left behind yet.

Del Surfin' dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Another Challengers or Paul Johnson-like tune that has plenty of surfiness about it, from that big guitar Duane Eddy direction, plus cool plucky bits. Nice track.

Incident At Broken Wind dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Now, this is a title to be reckoned with... Vibrato lead, slow-to-moderate pace, and a soothing melody line. The shimmer is irresistible.

Princess SFWS dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Low-E grind and shimmering notes. Very pretty track, with it's gentle power.

Shadow Of The Rangemaster dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Another fine title... The cowboy rhythms let you know they're not talkin' 'bout the oven, bro. Pretty cool track. I like it a lot. It's soothing and great to drive the old woodie to. The twang's the thang!

Theme For Young Lovers dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

As you might guess from the title, this track is a slow-dance number, fit for a surfers stomp or a country swing party. The pretty melody has a "High Noon" quality about it, and the sound is very pleasant.

Shempin' Surfari dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

So, are we talking Shemp Howard on a surf board, or what? Melodic and damped "Wipe Out" kinda feel. A bitchin' and soothing track.

Hotel Loneliness dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Great whammy and shimmer here. The vibrato is pristine, and the melody is very nice. I find this to be a most enjoyable track. The dual lead notes deliver a nice edge without beating you over the head. Very nice, guys.

Petey Kross The Merzey dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Another great title, which hints not the least at the real sense of the song. There's no Gerry & the Pacemakers sappiness. It has a nice plinky feel to it, and a well written melody line.

Twister dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A bit faster, with twin lead lines, and a shimmer and a bite. It has a lot of Spanish feel, somewhere between the Insect Surfersand the Sentinals. Very infectious and energetic. I like this track a lot.

Wave dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A cool funky rhythm track under a nice melodic guitar line. Clean sound. It makes you wanna get off your keester and do the twango. Cool track.
