Al Hotchkiss - Psychedelic Deathray (Internet Audio Archive)dotdotdotdot
artworkThis is a splendidly disturbed seven-track album from Al Hotchkiss. His sense of sound and arrangement are unique and unfettered by reality, with a touch of surf.
Picks: 106 miles, Batman Theme, Born Bad, Sky Surfer

Track by Track Review

106 miles dotdotdotdot
Surfadelic (Instrumental)

This is one eerie surf instro, with a clockwork second guitar and very ominous melody line line a dissonant spaghetti western in slide dementia. "106 miles" is wholly original and spooky. Like a weird scene inside an unbalance imagination, it's hard to look away. Very cool!

Batman Theme dotdotdotdot
Surfadelic (Instrumental)

This is one strange adaptation of Neil Hefty's "Batman Theme," with a nightmarish wash of uneasy sound, howling feedback, tortured whammy, and near-slide mayhem. Quite unusual!

Born Bad dotdotdot
Surfadelic (Instrumental)

Part surf, part blues, part Captain Beefheart, "Born Bad" rises from a near-blues birth to a blues for an asylum that's intense and nerve wracking. Yikes!

Sky Surfer dotdotdotdot
Surfadelic (Instrumental)

With a weird surf rhythm and howling reverbed dungeon of eeriness, "Sky Surfer" is more like mortuary surf than its title would suggest. Heavy, dank, watery, and unlit.
