Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA The Hollow Grinders - Dig Promos

 | This is an advance CD-R with 5 tracks from the forthcoming album "The Hollow Grinders Dig Chicks." They hope some label picks it up, but if not, it may well see the light of day on their own dime. An excellent disc. |
Picks: Repo Man, Pania, Piha Death-Rip, Hodad Bitch, Rapture Of The Deep
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
New Zealand's only surf instro band at the moment, the Hollow Grinders have an edgie approach to surf. This track shows their chunk twangage just fine. The only other band that has done "Repo Man" that I'm aware of was an Agent Orange clone from Sunnyvale, California alternately called the Thrusters (not the Santa Cruz band) and Public Safety. This version is full and fun.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Pania" is a very pretty piece, without being sappy. The keys hint of a late fifties lounge chorus. The haunting air and cool riff make for excellent listening. Significant delay is added to the reverb.
Surf (Instrumental)
New Zealand's best kept secret, power surge this instro with both surf and garage tones, and an awesome power. Buzzing it's way through the crowd, this rises to the challenge with intense Marshall-like distorto-verb. It sports a melodic progression with a mean attack and dark message. The discordant crashing end is extra swell.
Surf (Instrumental)
Exceptional damped picking, rippin' riffs, and speedy glissandoes occupy the speakers, suggesting significant attitude from the "Hodad Bitch" of the title. Musta been some encounter...
Surf (Instrumental)
Shimmering vibrato, slow and silky sound, and certain danger. "Rapture Of The Deep" is a solid track, interesting, soothing, and ominous too.
