Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA The Hi-Fives - Welcome To My Mind

 | The Ne'er Do Wells have changed their name for this CD to the Hi-Fives, so you may find it under either at your local indie shop. As with their "Gift Of Knowledge" CD, they include a few trashy garage surf tunes. I wonder if they ever play whole surf sets? |
Picks: Baja, Beauty Is the Mind
Track by Track Review
Surf Garage (Instrumental)
This is a spunky lightweight performance, very similar texturally to the JFA version, but lower fidelity. The sound is thin, though quite listenable. The arrangement is not varied enough. Still, it's an enjoyable track. The sleeve says this is "Mr. Moto" and that it is a traditional tune (public domain), a probable ploy to avoid paying publishing royalties I'd guess. It isn't Paul Johnson's tune. It is Lee Hazelwood's "Baja." He should be credited.
Cowsurf (Instrumental)
The great Al Perry delivers this reverby vibrato mood smasher. This is full of dark evil trembling groans, and thick back alley attack. Mid tempo, plundering, chord crunchy, and throbbing. Did I mention mean?
