 | This is a live recording. It captures the excellent Glasgow Tiki Shakers in full tilt. the sound is kinda murky i an ambient wash of room reverb, perhaps digitally induced, but the band plays very well and displays their ample arranging skills even in a live setting. |
Picks: Apache, Bamboo Boogie, Mr. Moto, Baja Depth Charge, 350 Bumper Car, Isn't Love Grand, Jet Black, Black Sand Beach, Tequila, Walk Don't Run, Pipeline, Yellow Jacket, Velvet Surf
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
This is a pretty straight forward rendition of Jerry Lordan's "Apache." It's a simple and direct arrangement that's quite pleasurable.
Surf (Instrumental)
Exotic percussion and a very playful melody ride above a circulating rhythm and bass. Together, "Bamboo Boogie" almost laughs. The grin and tweaky joy are irresistible. I love this!
Surf (Instrumental)
With great reverence, Paul Johnson's "Mr. Moto" is laid out for the fans. Lush and lovely.
Surf (Instrumental)
Warmer and more fluid than the McGlynn Brothers Band take, and very inviting. "Baja Depth Charge" is a playful song that's great as a backdrop for a palm-lined drive.
Surf (Instrumental)
On the faster side, "350 Bumper Car" romps with liquid joy and rich textures. The backtrack supports the melody quite well. Overall, it's a splashy good time.
Surf (Instrumental)
With a British Invasion feeling, "Isn't Love Grand" rolls along with an innocent optimism that's long since passed us by. Very pretty, and lots of fun.
Surf (Instrumental)
A quirky, sort of herky-jerky song with tweakiness and abundant grins. Thoroughly enjoyable. Is this Jet Harris' song?
Surf (Instrumental)
Yuzo Kayama's classy "Black Sand Beach" is a nice vehicle for the Glasgow Tiki Shakers. They treat it with respect and reverb.
Surf (Instrumental)
Chuck Rio's classic "Tequila" is liquefied and surfed out. Light and tribally inspired. A nice version with a great walking bass.
Surf (Instrumental)
This is a fairly straight cover of the Ventures 1960 interpretation of Johnny Smith's classic song. Nicely done.
Surf (Instrumental)
One of the essential surf instros, "Pipeline" always gets the nod. While it's strait forward, it's also on the moody side with booming bass. The muted lines add some intrigue.
Surf (Instrumental)
The Ventures' bouncing "Yellow Jacket" is done much as the V-boys did it. A little jazzy, a little rock, and a lot of fun.
Surf (Instrumental)
Lush swimming chords, softly tribal drums, moody bass... it's a deadly combination. "Velvet Surf" is a beautiful track with a haunting air and slightly sad emotional edge. This is quite compelling!
