The Ghosttones - Demodotdotdotdot
artworkThere's some variety here, with sultry SoCal beach epics to real solid surf and defiant rock. These guys seem to have disappeared, but these mp3's remain as a testament to what must have been one heck of a band.
Picks: Nalu, Crab Shack, Ciudad Mundial, Harry Bud, Sunset Shootout, Vlaanderen Boven, Onan's Sin, Surf City, Agent Orange

Track by Track Review

Nalu dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This nicely written piece has a very nineties soft surf melody that lures you in without a whimper. The fluid melody and sultry island imagery are really nice. The entire composition, from arrangement to delivery, is just wonderful.

Crab Shack dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Crab Shack" is an easy going piece with a very warm surf connection. Tonally, it's like the Aqua Velvets' "Green Sunshine," but rounder. Not quite as sinewy as that, but very pretty and alluring with power and edge too.

Ciudad Mundial dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Hard stompin', loud guitar drivin', and rock oriented, with glissandos and big bass. "Ciudad Mundial" is a track that commands your space.

Harry Bud dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

A ska beat behind a gently dribbled double picked melody with a taste of Italian countryside... yup, that about says it. It's a bit underdeveloped, but still very good.

Sunset Shootout dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big dark chords bring on slow and Godfather-sad melody that's full of pomp. It's a lovely piece with rich emotional content and dramatic power. Very strong!

Vlaanderen Boven dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

Fast and double picked, "Vlaanderen Boven" also a bouncy number with an original rhythm track and fuzz guitar. The melody is very good, and the fuzz not unlike some of Davie Allan's late sixties work. Excellent.

Onan's Sin dotdotdot
Rock (Instrumental)

This is a major rocker with big fuzz lead and a solid rock backtrack. Thumpy and crunchy and laden with string slide ecstasy. Way cool!

Surf City dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a rock solid surf instro with a great pumpin' beat and fine melody. Slithering glissandos and double picked guitar lines abound as "Surf City" runs across your speakers.

Agent Orange dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Agent Orange" is named for the band or the defoliant, it doesn't matter. It's a bit like Mike Palm's band - sorta - in its bigness, but not tonally or structurally. But, it certainly is a punky surf rocker, and that is like the band. None of that matters much. This is aloud pounder with gnarly string slides and hard pumping bass.
