The Ghastly Ones - A Haunting We Will Go-Godotdotdot
artworkThe Ghastly Ones seem to be a So Cal act, and somehow ended up on Zombie A Go-Go Records, a Geffin subsidiary. Their music is solid, and their image is made with capes and top hats. The band plays with a trad sound, accurately reproducing the era and style, and employing plenty of energy. The leads are double picked on the low-E, and the band generally shreds through fiery tunes with a eye on a tsunami outside. There are a couple of Wolfman jack styled vocals, and several interludes of narrated weirdness. A fine CD.

Track by Track Review

Ghastly Stomp dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This is a hot low-E double picked monster, with fine reverb kicks, and ample energy. It's not at all in the stomp style, but rather is an Orange County style rampager. melodic and infectious. Very strong track.

Hangman Hangten dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Less melodic than Ghastly Stomp, but equally powerful, this is more pummel oriented. Rich surf tones and panache accented with cries of "Hang Ten!"

Thunderhead dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Thundering toms, stormy energy, and menacing tone delivered through the double picked low-E leads. A strong shredding tube shaker. It rattles the cage of any complacent gremmie.

Haulin' Hearse dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Maximum energy guitar over flying drums. This is chunky, pumped, and a real surf grinder, ready to make you eat sand. Speed, power, and shortboard ecstasy.

The Lonesome Undertaker dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

With a melody very close to Surf Battle a.k.a. Goofy Foot (Lively Ones), though with a significantly different character, this is a melodic and most enjoyable track. Big, powerful, and swimming with whammy and reverb.

Mysterion dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

With the intense twang of Slacktone, this surf rage is dark and menacing, and viciously powerful. Chunky, power driven, and melodic enough for the memory cells. Strong and whammy accented.

Diabolo's Theme dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Dum-ta-dum-dum! Dum-ta-dum-dum-DUM! Between the classical drama, the Müout;nsters sensibility, some ominous reverb crashes, and some choppy TV rhythms, this fun track haunts the back corners of the Bijou, not far from the pop corn line.

Action Squad dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big chord chomp, fast paced almost Insect Surfer melody line, and visions of an MGB racing down highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay. Spiffy, spirited, and prancy.

Deadbeat dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Lumbering tom tom playfulness, like Ben Vaughn doing John Anderson tunes while chopping onions. Playful, percussive, and enjoyable. The chorus uttered a few times is "Dead Beat Dad."

Attack Of Robot Atomico dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Using vibrato to create almost "Telstar" noises, and a chord pattern not unlike "Third Star To The Left," this has an odd melody, but lot's of cold space danger and energy. It grows on you, like a sci-fi B-movie afternoon. Tribal, throbbing, and crunchy.

Los Campiones Del Justicio dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Big Spanish Dick Dale chordage, twang deluxe, and shredded Baha-Ree-Bah-isms combine into one powerful reverbomatic basher. Great track!

Hollywood Nocturne dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Fanfare chords, and a Pintor feel in a dashing double picked monster from the big surf of the landing, where the Carmel outflow swirls in the riptide. Twango and stomp ethics. Swimming whammy. Nitro fired glissandoes. Cool track.

Surfin' Spooks dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Ultra reverby, garagie progression surf. The melody is not memorable, but is quite typical of lessor singles of bygone eras. The energy is high, and the delivery is frat-like, though the playing is much better than that would imply. A cool track for your next alcohol binge party.

[Everybody's Doin'] The Ghastly Stomp dotdotdot
Surf (Vocal)

Weird string bent chords, stomped and chunked, with a Wolfman Jack kinda vocal.
