The Galaxy Trio - Saucers Over Vegasdotdotdot
artworkA solid slab of fuzz based surf driven whammified instro riff rock with warm tones and some tasty moments. This short CD (8 tracks) was recorded live to two track, though there's almost no use of stereo, delivering an effectively mono session.
Picks: Shaken Not Stirred, Saddle Sore, Jungle Juice, Strip Search, Log Jam, Jack Lord's Hair, Korla's Headgear, Conquistador

Track by Track Review

Shaken Not Stirred dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

Alcoholic titles do not create the correct image for this track. It's thick and intense, and whammy driven, though it relies too heavily on riffs and technique to fill the void where a melody should be. Having said that, it is a tuff track with major energy.

Saddle Sore dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

Visions of blisters on the butt are just not evoked by this thick and whammy pumped number. The riff is reminiscent of Brian Pool's licks with the Torpedoes, but slower and less in your face. Big and edgie.

Jungle Juice dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

Tribal drums a la the Tornados' "Jungle Fever," and thick compressed guitar eking sharp edges from stone. The riff never really develops into a song, but the thunder of impending doom threatens the faint at heart.

Strip Search dotdotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

Evil slow intensity details the probe of every crevice, while the menacing tone displays the wanton disregard for even the most basic of civil rights. Lumbering, the behemoth of the law out of control plunders the silence. Big and full of lurking danger. It's not melodic, but it demands attention from its sheer size.

Log Jam dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

Opening like there's a lurking "Penetration" about to unfold, "Log Jam" quickly drops into a riff of much less friendliness and thicker tone, almost dissonant. Repetitive but commanding for a short while.

Jack Lord's Hair dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

Just the title tells you it's gonna be a bad hair day for Tom Lopaka's successor on the 50th state TV trials. Slightly reminiscent of "Hawaii Five-0," but not as melodic or demanding.

Korla's Headgear dotdotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

Foreseeing the short lived fascination with the turbaned one and cheesiest organist ever from Ben Lomond, this track plays with laughing images and not a bad organ lick in sight. It's a splendid mystical riff played nicely with ample magnetism. Repetitious, but endearing.

Conquistador dotdotdot
Fuzz Surf (Instrumental)

This overused riff is well suited for this arrangement. The combination of the drums and thick whammified guitar works wonders on the theme. Excellent.
