Freddie-O and the Hell-Cats - Scared Toplessdotdotdot
artworkThis was inspired by Davie Allan, but is not up to that lofty standard. That doesn't make it bad, it's just hard to beat King Fuzz. It's a credible CD, musically strong, and fun. Guitars like a cross between Johnny Kool & the Rattlesnakes and Davie Allen, smoothed out and polished. Fred Olen Ray is a cult movie director and freakshow carnie, but one night forever ago, while hanging out with Lux Interior and Poison Ivy of the Cramps and Dukey Flyswatter of Haunted Garage, he caught Davie Allan at the Palomino Club. His life was changed. This is the outcome of that chance encounter.

Track by Track Review

Scared Topless dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

Rhythmic and chunky, fuzz based, melodically challenged, but progressionally strong. Edgie and fun, in a Munsters meets Brazil 2001 without Bernard Yin's sense of humor kinda way.

Surf Monster dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

Chunky, funky lowdown, twangy surfisms, horror beach, and smooth fuzz melody. This is a nice track, with a good melody line, and enough shimmer to fit.

Wild Jungle Captive dotdotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

Melodic, solidly played, smoothly delivered with interesting changes at the bridge and break, and a funky sorta feel. Cool track. Live recording.

Tokyo Stomp dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

Opening with sirens wailing, evolving into a biker rant with screaming girls. Nice melody, solid tones, and melodic writing.

This Just In dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

Among the less interesting and more progression oriented melody lines. This is solid, but just didn't grab me. The interspersed news announcements don't help.

War Of The Colossal Beat dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

An ugly countdown to an explosion, and then the fuzz kickstarts a smooth melody line with a moderate pace. A solid track.

Deviled Bats dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

This is a cool track, with a nice melody line, and endearing tones. It is interspersed with Dracularic voicings about bats and stuff. Fun.

Ghost Of Dragstrip Hollow dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

Hot rods skid and crash, and the twin guitar leads grind out a moody melody while sirens wail. Dark and brooding, and fun.

Indestructible dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

This is a fine melody line with a solid moderately paced backtrack. The sample from a gangster flick is cool too, though I don't quite see the connection.

Big Spooks A-Go-Go dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

A Green Onions-ish number without the soul, but with smooth tones.

Leechin' dotdotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

This is a fine track, with a grumbly backtrack, and a solid melody line that hints of Mancini and surf. There's plenty of spiff and uniqueness. Very likable from either the biker fuzz or surf viewpoint.

Eye Izza Zombie dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

Moderately chunky, mildly paced, and smoothly powered. It's melodic, and the chunka chunka rhythm is catchy. It doesn't hint of Roky Erickson's vision, but captures a sorta Lon Chaney Jr. sound. It ends rather abruptly into a sample spoken bit.

Hooked On Chainsaws dotdotdot
Fuzz (Instrumental)

A progression oriented movie music kinda track, like Hell's Angels on a country road sorta vision. A dark and evil, funky dirty Levis kinda track.
